St. Farnan’s/ St. Pat’s minor team were defeated in the minor B league final in Markievicz Park on Friday last by Tubbercurry/ Cloonacool on a score of 5-14 to 2-16. Both teams are to be commended on a terrific game of football played in a very sporting manner. It was a great achievement to get to the final and the side can look forward to the championship in a few weeks’ time.

The intermediate team got their first win of the year when they defeated Castleconnor in the Benson Cup by 2-11 to 1-9. Even though Castleconnor got the first two points of the game it was St. Farnan’s who dominated the half scoring 2-3 and two points from frees to lead 2-5 to 0-3 at the break.

Patrick Flynn replaced the injured Darren Hynes at half time. Castleconnor got the second half off to a great start with three unanswered points. A goal narrowed the margin to just two points but St. Farnan’s finished strongly and held onto to win by a five points margin. Caolan Gillen did an excellent job in defence aided by Conor Gordon. Gavin Connolly was top scorer and Iarla O’Connor and Stephen Feeney worked tirelessly. The team was Sean Healy, Caolan Gillen, John Quinn, Conor Gordon, Mark Devaney, Damian Kilgannon, Darren Hynes, Stephen Feeney (0-2(1f), Kevin Mc Gee, Gavin Connolly (1-4(3f), Iarla O’Connor (0-2), Declan Cawley (0-1), Niall Crean (0-1), Keith Lang, Shane Neary(1-1). It was also a good week for our under 17 county hurlers as they defeated Mayo in the Celtic Challenge. Cahan Hallinan, Thomas Cawley, Shane Molloy and Fionn Connolly are members of the team. Fionn Connolly also picked up the Best and Fairest Award for Sligo.

OWENMORE GAELS

THANKS to all supported and took part in the Marathon Relay and Fun Day, all in aid of our u14 Féile lads. There was a great turnout on what was a brilliant day. Well done to Gary and all the families of the u14 boys in helping organise this great event. Hard luck to the U-16 girls who lost out in the division 2 final on Wednesday evening to Eoghan Rua. Once again this team played some tremendous football but were finally beaten in extra time after the game finished a draw. The team can hold their heads high, they have put in some magnificent performances in recent weeks to make the final, playing a scintillating brand of football along the way. The club and their coaches, Anthony, Gerry and Marie-Claire, are extremely proud and look forward to seeing this team in the championship later in the year. Well done to our U-8 and U-10 teams who showcased their talents at Connolly park on Wednesday evening with games against Castleconnor. The club are saddened to hear of the passing of Thomas Haran, Claragh, Ballinacarrow, Co.Sligo. The club wish to extend sympathies to his brother Paul, sister Noelle, sister-in-law Síle, brother-in-law Johnny, niece Aife, nephews Iarla and Donal, relatives and friends. The club are saddened to hear of the passing of Lawerence Quigley. The club played in Quigleys field at Rinn for years and the club will always remember how accommodating the Quigley family were in facilitating us. We extend our condolences to family and friends. ST MARY’S

THE U14 boys travelled to Ballymote on Thursday last for Round 5 of their league. After an even start, a couple of quick goals were crucial and allowed us to pull away for a comfortable win. We continued our Feile preparations with an excellent challenge against Clann na Gael on Sunday. Please note that a Feile fundraiser will be held in St Marys on June 16th when there will be a carwash followed by a social evening. Heartbreak for our minors on Friday evening when we went down by 1 point to Geevagh/St Michaels after extra time in the league final played in perfect conditions in Scarden. This is a very youthful minor side and represented the Club with great pride and an attitude that would be an inspiration for any team throughout this very exciting game. We congratulate Geevagh/ St Michaels on their win. The U16 girls Division 1 league campaign came to an end at the semi final stage on Tuesday evening. After good wins against Shamrock Gaels & Tourlestrane in the previous must win matches, they took on Drumcliffe Rosses Point in Kent Park in yet another thriller. Things looked bleak when captain Ciara Gilroy was unable to field on account of an injury picked up against Tourlestrane, but in spite of her loss, the team carried their good form through this game. Drumcliffe started strongly scoring 2-02 without reply, but our response was resounding throughout the team and we turned things around to lead by 3 points at the break. The girls started the 2nd half strongly but did not turn this dominance into enough scores and unfortunately had a penalty saved. The game remained tight throughout the 2nd half, and extra time loomed approaching injury time. However Drumcliffe found that extra gear and even the late involvement of Ciara Gilroy could not turn the tide and Drumcliffe scored 3 goals in as many minutes of injury time to win 7.11 to 4.11. While the league ends for the girls, their form is on an upward trajectory and bad luck with injuries has hit the squad throughout the campaign. The squad can look forward with confidence to the A Championship which commences in August. Our ladies retained senior status in their last league match of this season against Geevagh. Well done to all on what has been a very challenging campaign from the start due to a number of long term injuries. 23 ladies competed through the league and gained valuable experience at this level. Their focus will switch to participation in the Senior Championship which will begin in August. No adult mens’ games this weekend and we wish Stephen Coen a speedy recovery from injury – he is missed by club and county. Next Saturday, (2 June), St. Mary’s are honoured to host the eleventh staging of the Clifford Cup, which is firmly established as one of the main U12 boys’ competitions in the region. Preparations are at an advanced stage, and we will welcome club teams from Donegal, Leitrim, Mayo and Galway. It is an event that will showcase all that is good about St. Mary’s GAA club. In advance of Saturday, we are holding a clean-up of the environs of Kent Park on Thursday 31 May 2018 from 8-9pm. It is hoped that as many club members as possible can give an hour in order that Kent Park is ready to welcome our guests on Saturday.

TOURLESTRANE

ON very hot days you can still play great football as was proved in a mighty high scoring game on Sunday afternoon in Ballymote where the needle hit 25 degrees plus in the Abbott Cup for our Jun- ior game v Ballymote. All the team played out of their skins to hope to seal the win as the teams swapped leads throughout the game. A penalty awarded to each side both converted added to 4 more each and matching points saw them level at the final whistle 5/12 each. Our young leaving cert lads played exceptionally well in their last game before the exam break Jon Durkin at midfield and Mark Lundy who converted a penalty. Welcome back to Rian Kennedy from his college Erasmus to Missouri and good to see he brought his shooting boots home with him scoring 3 goals and 3 from play and 2 frees. Also to Matthew the New Zealander Lang returned and back in the green and gold again. Diarmuid Dunne had a class game in a big week all round for him as he is off to marry Andrea next weekend and we wish them well. Great performance lads and we wish a speedy recovery to David O’Hara who suffered a knee injury in the game. Our seniors were out in Curry on Saturday night in Kiernan Cup action in evening sunshine and were slow starting and went in trailing 1/3 to Curry’s 8 points and the hosts a man down due a red card offence the mid way point. Curry kicked the first score of the second half but Tourlestrane got their act together and started to come back taking their scores and the game finished 5 points clear when the ref called time. Final score 4/7 to 14 points. Congratulations to Banada NS girls Cumman na nBunscoil winners on Saturday. Also to Sligo Hurlers who played Fermanagh in the Lory Meagher Cup and had a great win at the pitch Saturday afternoon . This sees them through to a Croke Park Final! On Friday night last our girls had their playoff game v St Nathy’s and a massive performance by the team spurred on by 2 great goals each from both Katie Walsh and Nicki Brennan and great team performances all round most especially our younger girls saw us safely through on a scoreline of 5/8 to 3/8 to our very first Senior girls final for the club ! Katie Walsh showed her true commitment to her club and team mates by playing alongside them for this game and had to forgo travelling to Croke Park to collect her award for division 2 Lidl team of the year . Well done Katie! Congratulations to our club leaving cert students who graduated this week from St Attractas and best wishes for your exams and to our underage club members who made their Confirmation on Sunday.
