Ballisodare Bay Cycling Club takes the lead in road safety

-

A Sligo cycling club has become the first in Ireland to introduce a high visibility kit for all of its members, in response to a surge in fatal and serious accidents across the country.

Ballisodare Bay Cycling Club is making the move after members decided to look for ways to make it easier for motorists to see them.

At least six cyclists have died on Irish roads this year, prompting the Ballisodare club to introduce the high visibility kit in response.

Club PRO Dolores McCann said: “Country roads, such as the ones that we cycle, can be particularly hazardous and we all have a responsibility to make ourselves better seen and to help avoid accidents.

“Ballisodare Bay Cycling Club has taken the initiative and introduced a visible kit for all members. All clubs take pride in wearing their club kit but there is reluctance among some cyclists to wear yellow high vis bibs over their jersey.

“Most cyclists are car owners and realise the issue of being visible and helping drivers see you quicker and farther down the road. The idea came from club members for something to make us all stand out while using the roads.

“All clubs have an etiquette for cycling in a group and while most people and motorists are respectful of cyclists some feel cyclists are not visible enough,” added Dolores.

The club’s annual charity cycle will be held on Saturday 23rd June with proceeds going to a local community sports complex development.

Registration takes place at St Mary’s College, Ballisodare at 9am. The 85Km cycle starts at 10am The route takes in the Hungry Rock, Coolaney and Dromore West. The 55km cycle starts at 10.15am. Both groups will return to a warm welcome of hot food and cakes.
