Celebrations as Benbulben FC win the U16 League
THE Benbulben FC U16 boys won the Division 1 cup final on Sunday 3rd June, 5-3 v Inishcrone/ Kilglass. It was a great team performance with all the lads contributing to a hard fought victory.
Both teams deserve great credit for putting in a titanic effort in the intense heat. The determination of both sides was seen in the physical battles around the pitch and in only the second minute Shane Collis O’Donovan and an I/K player were left flat on their backs after a nasty clash of heads. Despite the lumps and bruises they got up and battled on. It was a tight affair for the first quarter and then BFC took the lead through a fine headed effort by John Kerins. I/K equalised 10 minutes later to add to the tension. BFC regained the lead through Michael Gillen who was first to a cross from Joe Keany to tap home. Joe Keany, who troubled the I/K backline throughout the match made it 3-1 at the break with a piledriver from the right of the box.
I/K were a constant threat up to that point and in the opening period of the second half they scored to make it 3-2. Riain Conaty then took the ‘bull by the horns’ and scored two superb goals to put BFC 5-2 up.
I/K scored a third to add to the tension that was being felt all round but the lads dug deep and saw out the match for a well-deserved victory. The scorers were Joe Keany, John Kerins, Michael Gillen, Riain Conaty x2.
