Boylan to miss nine months with ACL injury

- By DAVID GOULDEN

SLIGO Rovers have been dealt a huge blow with the news that full-back Gary Boylan will miss the rest of the season due to injury.

The Mayo man was stretchered off in the early stages of the recent win over Derry City at the Brandywell, with scans revealing last Thursday that Boylan will be out of action for up to nine months due to an anterior cruciate ligament injury.

Commenting on Boylan’s misfortune, Bit O’Red boss Ger Lyttle has backed the 22-year-old who made his 100th league appearance against Derry, to return even stronger.

“We’re devastated for him”, Ger says. “He’s a great lad whose had an up and down season to be fair. He was only back from injury and it was long two or three days before we got the news.

“He’s down right now but we’ve spoken to him and all we can do as a club is support him. He’ll come back bigger and stronger. It’s a long one because of the severity of the injury and it’ll be into next year before he can look at returning to football.”

Lyttle revealed that he will likely have to make a move into the transfer market to fill the void left by both Boylan’s injury and Calum Waters’ return to Kilmarnock.

He said: “We have players capable of filling in for now but the window’s coming soon we hope we can have a look and see who’s available and strengthen.”
