What’s in a name? - The historical background

-

RESEARCH has found that the town name of Enniscrone was being used as far back as the 1700’s.

During the 18th, 19 th and 20 th Centuries there are written records of numerous spelling versions of the town name, for example, Enniscrowen, Inniscroan, Inishcrone, Enniscrone.

In 1975 a statutory instrument was created designating the official name for all postal towns, this document listed Enniscrone as ‘Inishcrone.’

In the 1990’s the National Roads Authority carried out a national road signs programme, using the statutory instrument in place since 1975. All of the roads signs then changed from Enniscrone to Inishcrone.

This has been a bugbear for people in the town ever since.

“Many of our businesses hinge on tourism and people being able to get into the town,” says local Solicitor Sinead Durkin, “Our employment in the town hinges on our ability to attract in visitors, we are trying to market ourselves as a town.

“David McGowan is looking to attract in US golfers and promote glamping. Our town has been officially misnamed and it is a massive thing.”
