Report recommends knocking of the facade of High Street building
SIX months on since it was declared “unsafe”, “structurally unsound” and at “high risk of collapse onto High Street,” No.39 High Street remains in the same condition.
Fianna Fáil Councillor Tom MacSharry tabled a motion urging Council engineering staff to address “the urgent health and safety issues posed” by the imminent collapse of the building next to the Friary.
Cllr MacSharry was told by Acting Director of Services Tom Brennan that the Council received the damning Engineer’s Report on 13th December last.
The Council only received a Conservation Report from the property agent on 10 th May, recommending the “careful dismantling of the front facade” only and reconstructing it.
It is expected that the necessary works will start “in the near future.” “That’s very disappointing,” said Cllr MacSharry. “I thought we would have a little bit more urgency with this. Demolition is the only plausible reality,” he said. Chief Executive Ciarán Hayes said: “There is engagement ongoing with the owner. There is no lack of urgency on our part.”
