SUMMER SCHOOL

Final plans are being put in place for the 32nd year of the South Sligo summer School of traditiona­l music, song and dance in Tubbercurr­y which runs from Sunday, July 15, to Saturday, July 21. This year Raidio na Gaeltachta’s Head of music, Neansai Ni Choisdealb­ha, will officially open the summer School. Following the official opening in St Brigid’s Hall at 7 p.m. on Sunday, 15th, to which everyone is invited, the ever popular local Swallows Tail Ceilí Band will play for the opening céilí from 8.30 to 11.30 p.m.

This year’s stellar line up of céilí bands in St Brigid’s Hall also includes Sligo’s own Dartry céilí Band, playing on Wednesday, 18th and the Swallows Tail céilí Band play again on Thursday, 19th. Registered students have free entry into the céilí on Thursday night. Other bands playing during the week include Matt Cunningham and the Glenside céilí Bands, both regular visitors to the summer school over the years.

Daily workshops in a wide variety of traditiona­l instrument­s will take place in St Attracta’s Community School and in a number of other venues around town. All ages and levels of experience welcome. We will help you find the workshop best suited to your needs. Registrati­on is from 8.30 a.m. on Monday morning, July 16, in St Brigid’s Hall, with pre-registrati­on also available online on our website sssschool. org.

The hugely popular Mixed Instrument­s Workshop for adults will be available again this year, facilitate­d by Fiona Doherty and Michael Hurley. Our classes are recognised for EPV/CPD for primary teachers by the Department of Education and Skills.

Having introduced the Harmonica for a trial workshop last year, Rick Epping this year for the full week. Rick will cater for players of varying levels of experience. Participan­ts need to bring a harmonica in the key of G Masterclas­ses are open to experience­d players in fiddle and flute this year, facilitate­d by John Carty and Colm O’Donnell. These take place on Tuesday, July 17, from 4 p.m. to 6 p.m. in the National School.

Nightly concerts and recitals featuring tutors, local and visiting musicians are always a highlight of the summer school and open to everyone to come along and listen to the very best in traditiona­l music and song. This year’s Monday night concert in St Attracta’s Community School is in honour of the Kearins Family. Fionnuala and her son and daughter Cian and Caoimhe have been teaching at the South Sligo summer School for many years. They will be joined by family and friends for a celebratio­n of music and song and it promises to be a very special night. Tickets will be available at the door. ACTIVE RETIREMENT

The local Active Retirement Associatio­n is suspending meetings for the months of July and August and wish to thank all members and friends for their support during the past year. June has been a very busy month for the group socially.

As well as their usual programme of activities, members have enjoyed a very pleasant week in North Wales, have attended the annual Sportsfest in Sligo where they were represente­d by their Curling team, took part in the Young at Heart Evening at Sligo Races and have, this week, been well entertaine­d by a session at Eagles Flying, Ballymote, followed by an excellent Lunch in the Coach House Hotel.

Some bowling practice will take during the rest of the summer in preparatio­n for the AR all-Ireland Competitio­ns in September.

LOUGH DERG

We would like to give advance notice of a One-Day pilgrimage to Lough Derg being organised for Tuesday, September 4, next. Cost, this year, will be €60, consisting of Lough Derg charge of €45, incl. boat and refreshmen­ts, plus €15 charge for coach.

This is open to all interested, and please ring 07184053 to book seats. As the number of visitors to Lough Derg is declining annually and funds are badly needed there, we would encourage support of this, one of our most famous Shrines. Come and enjoy a peaceful day on this holy island.

FR TOMAS SURLIS

Congratula­tions are extended to Fr Tomas Surlis, who has been appointed Pro-Rector of St Patrick’s College, Maynooth. Fr Tomas is son of Nancy and the late Tommy Joe and brother of Gearoid and Phyllis.

SVP VOLUNTEERS WANTED

ADVENTURE CAMP

Ox Mountain Adventure Camp are running their fun summer camps again this year from July 17 to July 20 and 24 – July 27 at 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. each day. Cost of €60 per child. Aged eight years approx. And over. We also cater for children’s birthday parties.

CARD GAME

25 Card game single hand is played in St Brigid’s Hall, Tubbercurr­y every Sunday night at 8.30 p.m. The card games will go right through the summer.

IRISH SUMMER SCHOOL

Irish summer courses will take place in Banada during the summer. Junior cert course will take place July 23 to July 27 and leaving cert course will take place July 30 to August 3. Call or text Siobhán for further details at 087 4510572.

PETER MCCARRICK R.I.P.

The recent death occurred peacefully of Peter McCarrick, late of Carrowreag­h Knox, Tubbercurr­y. In his early 80’s Peter was a quiet hard working farmer who ran a progressiv­e farm around his home at Carrowreag­h Knox.

He enjoyed the company of neighbours and friends and was never in too much of a hurry not to be able to stand and chat on the topics of the day. He had a great love of Irish Music and the Irish language and he enjoyed a discussion on politics of all types.

Peter’s remains reposed at the Morahan funeral home prior to removal to St John Evangelist Church, Tubbercurr­y. Burial took place in Cloonacool cemetery.

He is survived by his loving wife Frances, daughters Frances, Patricia and Noreen, sons Séamus and Peter, sisters Kathleen, Nora and Agnes, brother Jack, various inlaws, nephews, nieces, relatives and friends, all to whom sympathy is extended.

May he rest in Peace.

LYNNE CRAVEN R.I.P.

The sudden and unexpected death occurred recently at her home of Lynne Craven (née Blinkey), late of Corsallagh, Tubbercurr­y. Lynne was a quiet spoken and gentle lady who was always willing to lend a helping hand when required.

Her remains reposed at the Morahan funeral home prior to removal to St Michael’s Church, Cloonacool and burial took place in Rhue Cemetery.

She is survived by her husband Bill, daughter Amanda, son Stephen, brothers Stephen, Andy and Paul, inlaws, nephews, niec-
