UNDER 16 Girls
THE under 16 girls began their championship campaign with a tough home encounter with Eastern Harps. Fielding a depleted team, the girls struggled to get to the pace of the game and although they battled to the very end the visitors won convincingly. Despite the result, there were very impressive performances from Beibhinn Harte in goals, Holly Gilligan, Cliodhna O’ Sullivan, Shona Dalton, Aislinn Doggett and twelve year old Nessa O’ Sullivan (drafted in due to lack of numbers). Goals from Aislinn Doggett and Keri Mitchell were the highlights from the tie. Team; Beibhinn Harte, Ciara Lindsay, Eva Schoen, Nessa O’ Sullivan, Cliodhna Davitt, Holly Gilligan, Shona Dalton, Cliodhna O’ Sullivan, Keri Mitchell, Aislinn Doggett, Amy Deering, Eimear Callaghan, Eilis Burke, Anna Callaghan. UNDER 14 Boys
THE holiday season continues to play a major part in the fortunes of our young teams. The under 14 boys played their first championship match at home to Castleconnor on Friday evening. It was to prove a difficult assignment as numbers were depleted, but the boys put in a great effort and scored a very creditable 5-07 to their opponents 5-16. UNDER 16 Boys
OUR under 16 boys hosted the amalgamation of St. Farnan’s/St. Pat’s last Monday in the championship. Missing a number of players, and forced to play three thirteen year olds, the boys came up short on a scoreline of 2-14 to 5-15. CROKE Park Trip
ON SundayJuly 29th forty three under-age Coolera/Strandhill hurlers, coaches and mentors had their annual pilgrimage to Croke Park where they witnessed the absorbing All Ireland Senior match between Cork and Limerick. On the way they stopped off to play a match against St Mary’s Carrick on Shannon U13’s. This was a good work out and helped to clear the early morning cobwebs. TENSION was unusually high amongst the travelling contingent when they arrived at Croke Park, as the there was a “Guess the Score” fundraiser and prizes to be won. The match was an enthralling classic going to extra time with the underdog Limerick triumphing after extra time on a scoreline of 3-32 to 2-31. Congratulations to Cillian Corkery and Brendan Bree who were nearest to the correct score. After the obligatory stop off in Supermac’s on the way home a tired travelling party arrived back in Ransboro at 10.30pm. Thanks to Benny O’Loughlin, as ever for organising the day which ran like clockwork. Also, thanks to the parents who helped with the supervision of the children. UNDER 12 Hurling
ON Tuesday last Coolera/Strandhill U12 Hurler’s had the opportunity to put into practice the skills that they had witnessed in Croke Park as we hosted the newly formed St Molaise Gaels Hurling club. Their manager, John Doyle, is no stranger to Ransboro as he is normally the man in the middle. Coolera were slow to get going but led 3-0 after the first quarter and steadily increased the score each quarter against a dogged Molaise Gaels. The boys eventually won 17 to 2. The game was significant in that it saw both Hubert Healy and Eoghan Healy score their first goals for the club in only their second match. There were some encouraging performances from Conor Finan, Cormac Mullen, Hubert Healy who are new to the squad this year. Molaise found it hard to break through the half back line of Mark Keane, Jack McDaniel and Aidan Moran while Shane O’Loughlin continued to drive the team forward at every opportunity. The versatile Luke Giligan and Thomas Kinane were always looking for opportunities to attack the Grange boy’s defence and set up opportunities for the hard-working forwards Shane Galvin, Cillian Corkery, Aidan O’Loughlin, Sean Kinane and Finn McDaniel. James Lynch and Ultan Bree continue to progress with each match they play. This match was the eighth win in a row for this young team having overcome neighbours Naomh Eoin 7-3 and Easkey 15-3 in their last two matches. The team has qualified for the A League Final with one match to spare. Our last league hurling match is in Tourlestrane on Tuesday next at 7pm. Team; Cathal Hughes, Stefan McMahon, Luke Giligan, Ultan Bree, Cormac Mullen, Mark Keane, Jack McDaniel, Oisin Whelan Shane O’Loughlin, Conor Finan, Cillian Corkery, Shane Galvin, Aidan O’Loughlin, Hubert Healy, Aidan Moran, Sean Kinane, Finn McDaniel, Eoghan Healy, Thomas Kinane, James Lynch, Patrick Healy. SENIOR Football Championship THE Belfry Senior Championship got underway at the weekend. Our seniors were in action in Scarden on Saturday evening when they faced St. Molaise Gaels. After a good start which saw them open a two point lead, Coolera let the Grange side into the match with five unanswered points. However, further points from Niall Murphy and Barry O’ Mahony reduced the deficit before a goal and sixth Molaise point extended the lead again. By half time the lead was just two points and the tie was very much in the balance. Coolera-Strandhill started the second half strongly with four quick points from Murphy, Peter Laffey and Keelan Cawley to lead by two but a loose free went astray and the Grange side took full advantage to raise their second green flag. Points were exchanged as the match neared its conclusion, until Niall Murphy goaled after a good team work to put Coolera back into the lead. This time, they maintained the advantage and when Kevin Banks pointed in injury time victory on a score-line of 1-15 to 2-10 was sealed. Team; Kevin Kelly, Enda Mitchell, Gary Cawley, Mark Comerford, Seán Murphy (0-01), Conor McDonagh, Aaron O’ Boyle, Kevin Banks (0-01), Barry Doyle, Colin Parke (Mark McCallion), David McGee (Keelan Cawley (0-01)), Peter Laffey (0-01), Gary Cadden, (Karol O’ Neill), Barry O’ Mahony (0-03), Niall Murphy (1-08).
