There was also a win for Easkey/ St. Farnan’s minor hurlers when they overcame Tubbercurry by 3-12 to 1-4 in the second round of the championship. The club are holding a Cake Sale on Sunday, August 19 in Templeboy Hall after 10 30 Mass. Please support this fundraiser. Donations of home baking by parents and members and attendance at the sale would be greatly appreciated.

Ladies - The minor team, which is in amalgamation with St. Pat’s, came away empty handed from their opening “B” C’ship encounter with CT Gaels recently. Despite being an amalgamation the team is really struggling for numbers, an all too familiar occurrence for many clubs these days, and the management of the side are appealing to girls of the required age group who are not currently part of the squad to consider joining up for the next few weeks so that the side can compete favourably with opposing teams. The team’s next outing is against Calry/St. Joseph’s.

The U-16 amalgamation are one of just four clubs which will compete in the “B” C’ship in the grade, the others being Eastern Harps, Coolera/Strandhill and Geevagh. The group stage games in this competition are scheduled to take place over the month of August.

The St. Farnan’s /St Pat’s U-12’s are still looking for their first win after four rounds of the “A” C’ship. The side, which qualified to compete in the top tier by virtue of winning the “A” League Plate earlier in the year, have played against Eastern Harps, Eoghan Rua, St. Mary’s and St. Nathy’s to date but unfortunately defeat has been their lot on each occasion. The players and management are hoping to finish on a high when they take on Coolera/Strandhill in their final game.

The Gaelic for Mothers and Others group participated in the very enjoyable Blitz which was hosted by the Enniscrone /Kilglass Club last week. With eleven teams taking part in total, the side had three games, their opponents being the host cub and two teams from Mayo, The Neale and Moy Davitts. The group have, who have also played “friendlies” against Shamrock Gaels and Castleconnor recently, are sporting new Jersies which have been jointly sponsored by Arlene Tempany (A & N Tempany) and Farnan Scott(Scott Plant Hire & Civil).

St Farnan’s GAA Club are holding a two day coaching camp for 4 – 14 year olds on the 13th and 14th August. The fee is €30 (which includes a free T-shirt) and participation is open to both boys and girls. Club players Eamon Kilgannon, Paddy O’Connor and Finnian Cawley, all members of the current Sligo Senior Co. Squad, will provide the coaching. This is a novel initiative from the club and is worthy of support.

ST. JOHN’S

SENIOR Football

OUR Burns Cars-Skoda sponsored senior team began their quest for the Owen B Hunt Cup in Curry on Sat when they took on title holders Tourlestrane and despite an encouraging performance they were defeated by 0 -13 to 0 – 7. The champions, fresh from their Div 1 League title win, went into this game as firm favourites but our lads put in a determined showing and held their own for long periods of the game. Michael McNamara and his management team can be well pleased with this improved display and can now look forward to meeting Calry-St Josephs in a crunch game which is due to take place in Scarden next Sunday with a throwin time of 1.00. St Johns line-out; N O’Donnell; O Cox, E Roche, N Walsh; N Hayes, P McNamara, R Fahy; J Murphy(0-1), D Burke; B Mc Gowan, D Rooney(0-4), T Kelly(0-1); C Greene(0-1), S Stenson, C Harrison; Subs used D Smith for Walsh inj; A Keane for Stenson; P Murphy for Fahy; M Rooney for Kelly

ST. MARY’S

ST Marys Senior squad travelled to Tubbercurry for the first round of the Championship, which turned out to be a testing encounter with Coolaney/Mullinabreena. Marys got a bright start with an immediate free from Rory Guinan and this was followed by 4 further scores before Coolaney/Mullinabreena replied with 3 frees mid way through the half. Then Kyle Cawley struck with the only goal of the tie, which stretched our lead again to 5 points. Good play from Coolaney/Mullinabreena gradually ate into the lead and at the half, there was only 1 point in it again. For most of the second half the teams could not be divided, but shooting accuracy proved the difference between the teams and eventually Marys stretched their lead to win by 1-15 to 0-14. A good start to the campaign and well done to the lads, good luck next week against Tubbercurry. THE U16 girls had a great victory over Calry in the first round of their Championship. The league earlier in the season was exceptionally competitive and the signs are that the Championship will be a repeat. Despite missing a number of the squad due to holidays, our girls showed the momentum of earlier in the summer is still with them and put in a gutsy performance in a highly entertaining game that was a credit to both sides. Final scoreline was 9-08 to 6-11, and there is a 3 weeks break until the next round against Eoghan Rua. IN Bord na nOg, the U16 side had a big win over Geevagh in the A Championship and look on course to being very competitive as the competition progresses, and the U14’s were similarly impressive in their Championship when defeating Owenmore Gaels. The coming week sees our Minors in action when they take on Calry at Kent Park on Thursday. The U16 game scheduled for Monday 6yh has been cancelled and instead the lads have to await playing Ballymote/Bunninaden on Monday 13th.

TRAINING is continuing on Thrusdays and Sundays for September’s sponsored run/walk in Mitchell Curley Park and while there has been a very good response, more participants are welcome. Please contact David Keane or Niall Murray if interested.
