The Sligo Champion

Joy as Co Sligo’s Junior boys foursomes win the Connaught pennant

-

CO Sligo Golf Club was celebrating recently when the club’s junior boys foursomes team won the Connaught pennant and will represent the province in late September in Tramore GC in the all Ireland finals.

The first pairing of 15-year-old Daniel Ford (2) playing with 12-year-old Aodhgan Brady (6) were solid in the qualifier with a very impressive up and down on the last. Recent course record holder of Bomore, Tom Flanagan now off 2 was paired with fellow 15-year-old and 5 handicapper Niall McDermott who proved to be an awesome pairing throughout the tournament.

This event is an under 18 event so to win in Connacht at this stage bodes very well for the future of our junior program.

Club captain Joe Keyes said in his speech having received the pennant from team captain and junior convenor, Robert Fitzpatrick, that it was evident all the hard work from the players, parents and volunteers is starting to bear fruit.

Co Sligo beat Athenry in the semi-final to set up an all Sligo final against Castledargan who overcame Roscommon in the morning.

Match 1 with Ford and Brady was a very tight match while match 2 with Flanagan and McDermott got off to a flyer and never let their opponents back into the match on what were very tricky conditions.

The panel will now prepare for the All Ireland’s where they will hopefully return with a green pennant.

Co Sligo will be cheering on the Connaught representatives very proudly.
