Morgan leaves to ‘focus on recovery’
Striker Adam Morgan’s Sligo Rovers journey came to an end last week as the Liverpudlian returned home to recover from an abdomen injury that has riddled his season.
The 24-year-old, who had previously played for Liverpool’s youth team, scored four goals in his first five league games, but failed to set the league alight after that, scoring just one more goal, that was against Galway in the EA Sports Cup. His last appearance for the Bit O’Red was off the bench on June 15th, and he was likely to be out of action until October.
Manager Ger Lyttle admitted that the decision was not an easy one, but it was the right one for Morgan himself given the difficulties he has had.
“Adam came to us yesterday (Tuesday). He’s had real bad luck with the injury and he’s been out for more than half of the season now and potentially wouldn’t be back until the start of October,” he said.
“We’ve had a conversation with him and we’ve both agreed that it would be best for Adam to go and get himself sorted and get himself fit. Adam’s been a great servant here. He’s come in, he’s been excellent with how he’s conducted himself in training, his professionalism, he’s a great lad. I’ve a lot of time for him. If you ask any of the lads they would say the same. He’s a great character. Unfortunately he’s had a lot of bad luck and these things happen in footballers’ careers. Adam’s big enough and strong enough to know that. I wish him the best in his future going forward.”
There were hopes that Morgan would fulfil the potential he showed earlier in his career, but unfortunately a stomach injury prevented him from doing so.
Lyttle added: “Yesterday was very emotional, I’ll be honest with you, for both myself and Adam. Because we wanted Adam to come here and to be a big hit for us. Adam knows that. Unfortunately he’s been riddled with a bad injury. He did it right and he’ll get himself sorted out.
“When you see a player ideally you want him to come here and score goals and you want him to be a big hit. I think he started off like the player we knew we were going to sign. Unfortunately he was playing through an injury that just got worse. He had to get sorted out. Time was running out for the season. I think Adam realised that and came to us. He’s very honest and open with what he wanted and I respect him for that.”
