BALLYMOTE have reached Intermediate quarter finals after beating Geevagh in a highly competitive game last Saturday evening in Cloonacool.

Ballymote got off to a dream start scoring 1-3, Niall Colsh scoring three frees and a goal from Mark Irwin. Geevagh eventually settled and got their first point from Jodie Reilly after 12mins.

Geevagh dominated the next period and scored the next 3 points. Michael Flannery made 3 great saves as Geevagh went in search for goals.

Flannery made a point blank save from Pat Hughes and Ballymote immediately moved the ball up field resulting in Niall Brennan getting Ballymote’s second goal after a goal line scramble.

Gerry Brennan scored Ballymote’s next point giving Ballymote a 2-4 advantage to Geevagh 0-5 at half time. Second half Geevagh got the start they needed scoring 4 points before Ballymote Niall Colsh scored a point from play.

Geevagh again dominated the next passage of play. Ballymote defence and midfield pair Michael Rafferty and Michael Doddy were exceptional, involved in most of Ballymote’s key moments.

In the closing stages of the game Geevagh went one point up yet Paul O Grady’s side showed their through resolve by getting back into the game and restoring their lead with two points from Stephen Ross and a goal from Gerry Brennan which gave Ballymote a lead in the closing stages of the game. Pat Hughes and Kevin Henry scored the closing points for Geevagh but goals win games and Ballymote scoring power in front of the net proved to be the winning factor.

Ballymote can now look forward to an Intermediate quarter final against Enniscrone/Kilglass knowing that Intermediate football for 2019 is secure.
