ST MOLAISE GAELS

OUR senior men have qualified for the quarterfinals of the Championship following a hardfought 1-11 to 0-09 win against neighbours Drumcliffe/Rosses Point in Kent Park on Saturday evening last.

It was a tense close encounter with no more than two points between the teams at any stage throughout until Calum O’Domhnaill showed remarkable composure beyond his years to score the only goal of the game in the fourth minute of second half injury time. The sides had been level 0-04 each at the interval with Gaels grateful for the accuracy of Alan McLoughlin who kicked three superb first half scores. The game did open up a little more in the second period with Gaels gaining a two point lead through points from Mark Quinn and Jamie McLoughlin but Drumcliffe/Rosses Point continued to press but their efforts were finally ended by O’Domhnaills late goal. Well done to the squad and Management Team who now have a quarter final clash in two weeks time to look forward too.

Our U14 Boys were beaten at home on Friday by Calry/St Josephs on a score line of 4-10 to 1-03 in the B Championship on Friday night last while the previous evening our Minor Boys went down to a heavy defeat against an excellent Shamrock Gaels side in Coola.

ST FARNAN’S LADIES

THE Juniors opened their championship campaign against Curry on Sunday.

The game was a repeat of the ACL Shield Final played back in May and the management and players would have been hoping for a reversal of the result on that occasion which saw the spoils going to the South Sligo side. Our girls put in a solid performance and there was little between the sides until the Curry girls pulled away in the closing minutes to emerge victorious on a score line of 3-10 to 1-9. Next up for the team is a visit to Molaise Gaels next Sunday.

The St. Farnan’s / St. Pat’s minors had a three point win over Geevagh / St. Michaels on Wednesday last. The result means that victory in their final game against Calry / St. Joseph’s will see the side clinch a spot in the final of the competition.

The St. Farnan’s / St. Pat’s U-16’s have a busy week ahead with home fixtures against both Eastern Harps tomorrow, Mon- day, and Coolera / Strandhill on Thursday.

The Sligo Ladies narrowly missed out on clinching a spot in the All-Ireland Intermediate Final when going down to Tyrone in dramatic fashion at the semi-final stage on Saturday week last in Ballyshannon. In a game that ebbed and flowed throughout, the Ulster side seemed to be home and hosed when they opened up a five point lead with the game in the dying minutes.

However, Paddy Henry’s charges dug deep and conjured up two goals in as many minutes to put the game back in the melting pot with stoppage time beckoning. Tyrone weren’t to be outdone though and snatched the last few scores, including a goal, to take the spoils on a score line of 3-14 to 3-10.

Hard luck to all involved on the day including our own Leah Kelly. Meanwhile spare a thought for the dilemma our other player in the squad, Claire Dunne, found herself in.

The talented youngster, who has featured in all of Sligo’s matches since being drafted into the panel in June, looked like being a definite starter but she had also qualified to compete in the All-Ireland Fleadh which turned out to be at the same time on the same day on the other side of the country.

In what will be probably the most difficult decision she will likely have to make in what looks like being a promising football career she opted for the Fleadh on this occasion, thereby missing out on what would have been the biggest game she would have played to date.

Speaking of the All-Ireland Fleadh which was held in Drogheda, congratulations to the many of our players, past and present, who took part in the event and especially those who managed to get among the prize winners.

Congratulations to former club underage player, Emer Reynolds, and Chris Myles, on their recent engagement.

Well done to those of our players who have got their Leaving Cert results recently and good luck in the years ahead, be it in college or working.

ST FARNAN’S

THE Junior team got their second win in the Junior B championship when they defeated neighbours Easkey on Saturday last in Templeboy by 2-16 to 2-13.

St. Farnan’s dominated the start of this game leading 1-5 to no score. David Culkin got the first goal.

Easkey we’re allowed back into the game but a second goal from Shane Feeney meant we had a one point lead at half time. After the break St. Farnan’s lost Conor Feeney to a second yellow.

The team played a man down until the last ten minutes when Thomas Rolston got a second yellow. There were goal chances for both sides but were denied , thanks to the work of both goalkeepers.

The team was Sean Hallinan, Declan Taylor, Darragh Gillen, Niall Crean, Patrick Flynn, Oisin Connolly, Kieran Kilgannon, David Culkin, Shane Feeney, Stephen Tempany, Gavin Calpin, Niall Culkin, Stephen Crean Subs: John Mc Nulty, Karl Hannon, Conor Feeney, Tomas Ryan, Ronan Molloy, David Finnegan, Cormac Mc Gowan.

Easkey/ St. Farnan’s under 14 football team defeated Ballymote/ Bunninadden on Friday night in Templeboy in a high scoring encounter, 9-8 to 6-13.
