The Sligo Champion

GRASSROOTS

-

The Sligo Ladies narrowly missed out on clinching a spot in the All-Ireland Intermediate Final when going down to Tyrone in dramatic fashion at the semi-final stage on Saturday week last in Ballyshannon. In a game that ebbed and flowed throughout, the Ulster side seemed to be home and hosed when they opened up a five point lead with the game in the dying minutes. However, Paddy Henry’s charges dug deep and conjured up two goals in as many minutes to put the game back in the melting pot with stoppage time beckoning. Tyrone weren’t to be outdone though and snatched the last few scores, including a goal, to take the spoils on a score line of 3-14 to 3-10. Hard luck to all involved on the day including our own Leah Kelly. Meanwhile spare a thought for the dilemma our other player in the squad, Claire Dunne, found herself in. The talented youngster, who has featured in all of Sligo’s matches since being drafted into the panel in June, looked like being a definite starter but she had also qualified to compete in the All-Ireland Fleadh which turned out to be at the same time on the same day on the other side of the country. In what will be probably the most difficult decision she will likely have to make in what looks like being a promising football career she opted for the Fleadh on this occasion, thereby missing out on what would have been the biggest game she would have played to date.

Speaking of the All-Ireland Fleadh which was held in Drogheda, congratulations to the many of our players, past and present, who took part in the event and especially those who managed to get among the prize winners.

Congratulations to former club underage player, Emer Reynolds, and Chris Myles, on their recent engagement.

Well done to those of our players who have got their Leaving Cert results recently and good luck in the years ahead, be it in college or working.

TOURLESTRANE

OUR seniors were on winning form this weekend both the ladies and the men winning their games .

Our ladies had a comprehensive win over Owenmore Gaels Sunday morning in very wet conditions as the crowd in Knock got soaked attending the pope as well but in both cases it was worth it ! . The senior men won their final game of the first stages of championship v Calry on a scoreline of 2/11 to 1/10.

On Friday our u12 girls were beaten by CT Gaels and neighbours Curry overcame our u14 boys also .

Thursday our minor girls were beaten in the minor A final by a stronger Shamrock Gaels team.

Wednesday night last our u14 Hurlers beat Naomh Eoin by 4/10 to 4/9 and Monday last our u14 girls had a great win v Calry.

Best of luck to our club members who started on their St Attracta’s secondary school journey

on Friday and we wish them well.

DRUMCLIFFE/RP

THERE was disappointment for both our senior men’s and intermediates ladies football teams on the championship front at the weekend.

The men put in a gutsy display against St Molaise Gaels on Saturday evening at Kent Park in their concluding Group 2 game of the senior club championship before going down on a final scoreline of 1-11 to 0-9. We dominated possession for long periods of this game but weren’t able to translate that possession into enough scores. The result means we will once again have to come through a relegation play-off, which also involves St John’s and Eastern Harps, in order to preserve our senior championship status for 2019.

Our ladies intermediate footballers opened their championship campaign last Sunday morning with a trip to Tubbercurry. Despite two goals from Amanda Healy, and one each from her sister Roisin and Sinead Regan, it wasn’t enough to prevent opponents CT run out winners by three points on a final scoreline of 2-15 to 4-6. The girls play Owenmore Gaels at Oxfield next Sunday morning at 10am. Last Sunday’s team was: Rachel Quigley, Orlaith Furey (Capt), Avril Clancy, Shirley Nicholson, Lisa McLoughlin, Michelle McNamara, Kate Keyes, Sinead Regan 1-0, Jayne McCormack, Laura Oates, Amanda Healy 2-2, Molly Brady 0-1, Roisin Healy 1-3, Tara Donohoe 0-1, Tracey O’Boyle. Subs: Aimee Oates, Megan Brady, Aisling O’Reilly.

There was another encouraging championship win for the DRP U14 girls footballers last Monday evening as they travelled to south Sligo and recorded a 4-11 to 5-4 win against CT Gaels. That’s two wins out of two so far.

All-Ireland final Sunday will be a special occasion for one club member this weekend. Rianne Smith will represent Sligo in the Cumann na mBunscol match at half-time during the senior final between Dublin and Tyrone.

The club will have two representatives on the Sligo Under 16 team competing in the upcoming Ted Webb Cup.. Lee Cummins and Eoghan Smith are both on the Sligo panel for matches this week against Leitrim and Galway.

BUNNINNADDEN

OUR Intermediate team qualified for a quarter final match against old rivals following an impressive 3-15 to 0-7 win over St Michael’s on Sunday.

Once again the foundations for victory were laid with a fine first half display of fast attacking football which saw us lead at the break by 1-9 to0-1-the goal coming from V Frizzell who amassed a total for the day of 2-9. Although we failed to score in the third quarter where we hand to withstand a spirited rally from our opponents a converted penalty by Frizzell and a fine finish to the net by the impressive ConorMurray saw us coast to victory.

SHAMROCK GAELS

THE monthly club meeting takes place this Friday at 9PM in the clubhouse while the Bord Ná Nóg meeting will also take place on Friday at 8.45PM.

It was a great week on the football front with all teams winning their respective matches - well done to all teams and management.

The Senior team had a great second half performance pulling back a nine point deficit to draw with Curry and make the semi-final of the Intermediate Championship and indeed they almost won the game, going ahead with an Andrew Flynn point on the stroke of full time only to see Curry level deep into injury time. The team was: Donal Tuohy, Ben Tuohy (Declan Willis), Paul Higgins, Andrew Flynn (0-1) Karl McKenna, Evan Lyons, Gavin McMorrow, Michael Kilkenny (Dillon McDermott), Joe Henry, Ciaran O’Connor (James Carroll), Brian Boyd (Seamus Hailstones), Keith McMorrow (01), David Quinn (0-10, 6f), Frank Quinn (0-1f), Shane Deignan.

The Junior men take on Owenmore Gaels in Round 2 of the Championship next Saturday at 6.30PM in Ballymote.

The Senior ladies got the Championship off to a winning start with a 5-16 to 2-6 win over St Maloise Gaels last Sunday. The team was: Meabh McDermott, Lisa Callaghan (Eillis O’Connor), Aisling Boyd, Catherine Tuohy, Roisin Durey (Isobel Clarke), Aoife Morrisroe (0-2), Naomh Quinn, Jade Lyons (0-2), Siobhan Brennan, Roisin Kearns (0-1), Lousie Merrick (0-3), Erin Mullaney (0-2) (Aoife O’Connor), Mairead Tuohy (1-1) (Fiona Baker, 0-2), Simone Kelly (4-1), (Makayla McLoughlin), Rachel Boyd (0-2). Subs: Seana Durey, Sonia McDermott, Jane Benson. They now take on Curry away next Sunday at 10.00AM.

The Minor Girls had a great win on Thursday securing the Minor A title in an entertaining game against Tourlestrane. They ran out 3-10 to 2-5 winners and will now face the Galway champions in Connacht in mid October. The team was: Meabh Mc Dermott (Capt), Lisa Callaghan, Aoife Morrisroe, Roisin Drury, Kate Brady, Jade Lyons (1-0), Isobel Clark, Eala McDermott, Louise Merrick, Roisin Kearns (2-0), Erin Mullaney (0-1), Rachel Boyd (0-3), Makayla McLoughlin (0-5), Mairead Tuohy, Jane Benson (0-1) Subs: Nadine Hargadon for Mairead Tuohy, Amy Healy for Erin Mullaney, Chloe McTiernan for Jane Benson, Andie Brady, Kate Brehony, Ellie McDermott.

The Minor boys continued their undefeated run with a 7-14 to 1-9 win over St Maloise Gaels in the A Championship and now qualify for the final.

The Club wish to express sympathy with the family and relatives of Sandy Sandford, Drumee, Thomas Ingram, Drumfin and Eileen McDonagh, Ballindoon all of whom died last week.

ST MARY’S

ST Mary’s Senior Men travelled to Bunninadden in Round 3 of the Belfry Senior Football Championship to play Eastern Harps. It was a big game for both teams with the possibility of a relegation battle for the losers.

Harps started the liveliest and raced into a 1-01 to no score leaf in the opening exchanges aided with a stiff breeze. As Mary’s got back into the game they looked to the experience of Johnny Lynch and Johnny Davey to break up attacks in the middle of the pitch. A Niall McManus goal started Mary’s on their way. His long stretch Armstrong arm managed to get on the end of a long ball and turn the ball into the net. Mary’s went in one point up at half time. The second half seen Mary’s not release their lead despite being down to fourteen men. 2 points from Fintan Ruddy proved the difference as the referee called time on proceedings with Mary’s ahead on a score of 1-14 to 1-12 and a quarter final now awaits Mary’s in two weeks

Our senior ladies lost thier first championship game against st nathys 1-8 to 1-3. There were strong performances throughout the team and they were left very disappointed at not getting something from the game. A special mention to Ciara gilroy , Aoife smith and Lauren cadden who played thier first adult championship football. They play eastern harps next Sunday morning at home at 10 and all support would be welcome in this vital game.

Our minors went down to Geevagh/St Michaels on Thursday evening by 2 points , it was a very good display by a very young minor team , our last game in group is at home to St Johns on September 14th

GEEVAGH

The Intermediate footballers crashed out at the group stages and now must face the alarming prospect of a play off to avoid relegation to the junior ranks. Geevagh got off to a horrific start by conceding early scores and when Ballymote struck for goal they found themselves six points adrift before they themselves exerted any influence on proceedings. A second Ballymote goal against the run of play left us with a mountain to scale in the second half.

To their credit Geevagh rallied after the break to fire over six unanswered points and claim the lead.

However, the concession of a number of scorable frees handed the initiative back to Ballymote who managed to hold on for a narrow but crucial one point victory.

A fundraising raffle takes place in the Resource Centre on Wednesday 29th August at 8.30 pm where the top prize is a pair of All Ireland Football Final tickets.

An important club meeting will take place following the draw. All executive members are required to attend please.

The club extends deepest sympathy to the Mc Donagh family on the death of Eileen Mc Donagh Ballindoon, grandmother of senior player Eddie Farrell and mother – in- law of executive member Brian Farrell. Ar Dheis De go raibh a hanam dilis.

ST JOHN’S

OUR U18 minor team got back to winning ways with a fine victory over visitors Castleconnor in Stenson Park last Wed on a scoreline of 1-10 to 0-7.

This was a much-improved performance from our lads and it will give them great encouragement before they face neighbours St Marys in Kent Park on Sept 14th. A special thanks to Castleconnor for agreeing to rearrange to fixture to facilitate a Grad Dance

Our under 16 team having qualified for the County final await their opponents who will be decided after a play-off game on Sept 10th between Tourlestrane and Easkey/ Enniscrone/Kilglass. The final will be arranged shortly after this.

Our under 14 boys team made it three wins from three games when they defeated Coolaney/ Mullinabreena in Stenson Park last week. Our boys started the game strongly and led by 4-2 to 1-2 at half time.

Our defence has improved throughout the campaign and again they stood strong and the team managed the game well to run our winners by 4-10 to 1-5.

We say well done to this group of lads and their management. On the night it was a great team performance but the “man of the match” accolade must go to Jack Gibbons who put in a great display of scoring both from play and frees.

NAOMH EOIN

THE winning time for our All Ireland Final Golden Goal fundraiser was 16 minutes and 2 seconds. Holder of the winning ticket should contact the club at the number provided on the ticket. THANKS to all who supported our fundraiser which helps to maintain our club teams throughout the year.

Our senior hurlers hope to make it five wins from five championship games as they welcome 2017 county champions Calry St. Joseph’s to Kent Park on Saturday evening at 6.30pm. A first championship win against our town rivals would provide great momentum as they look forward to a SHC semi-final tie later in September. Please support the team.

CALRY/ST JOSEPH’S

OUR Senior team lost out narrowly after a fighting performance against reigning County Champions Tourlestrane in the Belfry Senior Football Championship on Saturday evening last at Tubbercurry.

This means the lads finished second in their group and qualify for the quarter-finals where they will face Coolaney/Mullinabreena.

Our Junior team have a “do or die” battle against Easkeyi in Easkey on Friday evening next where the “winner takes all” and progresses to the quarter-finals.

A huge well done and thank you to all of you who took part in our flag day in Sligo town on Friday last.

A fantastic effort was put in by all our senior teams.

Meanwhile if anyone has any outstanding ticket books for our raffle could you please return them as soon as possible to the committee.

We had two visiting teams from Manorhamilton and Naomh Molaise Gaels but our very young team acquitted themselves brilliantly to come away with maximum points from both their games.
