The Sligo Champion

Mayo Sligo Mart report

-

THE first Monday sale of weanling saw over 680 calves on offer. It was generally accepted it was the best yard of bull calves on offer in years with exceptional quality lots on offer. As well as local buyers we had customers from the North, Midlands and the East Coast of the country with great competition around the rings especially for quality lots.

The top bull price on the day going to a Belmullet farmer with a CH bull 486kg making €1460 purchased by a farmer from Co Laois. Another Ch bull from a Dromore West farmer was 400kg made €1280 going to a local farmer. The top LM calf came from a Bangor Erris farmer weighting 432kg making €1275 purchased by a farmer from Co Offaly. The best BB calf was shown by a Culleens farmer weighting 390kg and was sold for €1340 to a Donegal based exporter. In the lighter lots an Enniscrone farmer sold a 354kg CH calf for €1170 to a local feeder.

In summary bulls over 400kg made from €2.00 to €3.20 for the top lots with shippers & feedlots competing for these lots. Bulls from 300kg upwards making from €700 to €1170 with farmers competing with agents for these lots. The top third grade bull calves are €30-€50 dearer than the same sale last year whilst the lower grade calf is €40-€70 less than this time last year.

The heifer’s weanling trade was good to firm for quality lots over 300kg with lesser quality and lighter lots harder sold. The top calf was a BB calf from Culleens making €1250 with another one making €1190 both sold for export. A Ch calf from Belmullet weighting 380kg made €1170 whilst a light CH shown by a Culleens farmer weighting 286kg made €900.00. The top LM calf came from Ballycroy weighting 386kg and making €1065 going to a farmer from Grange.

The top third grade heifer calves are on par with the same sale last year whilst the lower grade calf is €30-€80 less than this time last year.
