LADIES: Our Gaelic 4 Mothers & Others group were just one of the 102 teams from around the country which descended on the Naomh Mearnog GAA club grounds in Dublin for the National Blitz on Saturday week last. On a perfect day for football the side played a total of five games against opposition from Ballymun Kickhams (Dublin), St. Mary’s, Convoy (Donegal), Bredagh (Down), Killucan (Westmeath) and Na Gaeil (Kerry). Games were of 10 minutes duration and teams were 10 a side and everyone thoroughly enjoyed the occasion.

Following the long journey home the group, as has been the case after many of the Blitzes and games during the year, adjourned to the Flying Horse where Gerry and staff had laid on the usual array of refreshments. Gerry was presented with a framed and signed replica team jersey as a token of the group’s appreciation of his support and generosity.

The group have been training since March and are indebted to team coaches Ted Maloney & Imelda McNulty for all their work and commitment. Ted was also presented with a framed jersey.

The event brings the curtain down on what has been a truly remarkable year for those involved, with new friendships being forged, some of which are destined to last a lifetime. Not to mention the fact that between challenge games & blitzes, a total of 18 games were played. Not bad going for mothers & others!!

The ladies that travelled on the day were A.Griffin, M.Carney, C.Coen, A.Toolan, S.Dunne, P.Hargadon, G.Watters, I.McNulty, S.Scott, J.Scott, N.Browne, S.Tempany, G.Doyle, A.McMunn, S.Durkan, K.Henry, A.Kilgannon. Those unable to make the trip were N.Walsh, D.Burke & M.Dennison.

Thanks to all who supported the Cake Sale in Templeboy on Sunday which was in aid of the Sligo Ladies Co. Bd. “Strictly come Dancing” fundraiser which is coming up soon with the proceeds being divided equally between the club and the Co. Bd. Our club will be represented in the event by J.McAndrew, J.Donlon, M.Scott, L.Kelly and C.McCloat.

The club are holding a Family Table Quiz in The Still Bar on Saturday, October 27th next and are appealing for your support. These type of fundraisers are necessary to help keep football alive in the club and it is essential that they are supported.

Sympathy is extended to Hannon family, Dromore West, the Mulligan family, Doonalton, and the relatives of the late Christy Carbury, Gleaneaskey, on their recent bereavements.

The U10 girls celebrated the end of their season by participating in a Sligo LGFA blitz in Sligo IT recently. Following a great day’s football the girls got to meet some members of the Sligo Ladies Senior team.

CLOONACOOL

IT was a big day for our club on Saturday last as we hosted the County Junior A Championship football final in Cloonacool Community Park. In terrible weather conditions a large crowd were treated to a very competitive game of football between Easkey and Owenmore Gaels. Easkey became worthy county champions on a 1-11 to 1-5 scoreline. A big thank you to all the stewards who turned out in big numbers in support of the club, to ensure the day was a big success in appalling conditions. Hard luck to the CT. Gaels ladies team last weekend, they had a great year and this experience will only stand to them going forward. SHAMROCK GAELS

IT was a disappointing weekend with both minor teams making their exit from the Championship. First up was the Minor Girls who lost 3-15 to 0-6 against Galway Champions, Kilkerrin/Clonberne in the quarter final of the A Connaught Championship. The Girls were well in the game in the first half, however a stronger Kilkerrin/ Clonberne slowly pulled away and we were left with a mountain to climb in the second half. The Girls however never gave up and went down fighting encouraged on by the large vocal Gaels contingent who had travelled to support the team. Thanks to the team for all their work this year and to managers Fiona Lyons, Michelle Tuohy and Aoife O’Connor for their work with the team. The team was: Meabh McDermott (C), Lisa O’Callaghan (Amy Healy), Aoife Morrisroe, Roisín Durey (Ellie McDermott), Isobel Clarke, Jade Lyons, Kate Brady, Eala McDermott (0-1), Louise Merrick, Rachel Boyd (0-3), Erin Mullaney (0-1), Roisin Kearns, Makayla McLoughlin (0-1), Mairead Tuohy (Chloe McTiernan), Jane Benson (Andie Brady). Kate Brehony, Nadine Hargadon. THE Minor boys had a heartbreaking loss to St Molaise Gaels in the Minor A Championship final. Having been in control of the game after clawing back a six point deficit in the second half, the Gaels went two points ahead in the closing stages and while they had chances to extend the lead, it was St Molaise Gaels who finished strongly scoring a goal in injury time to snatch victory on a final scoreline of 5-7 to 4-11. This has been a great year for the minor team and it was disappointing to lose in this way and only the team’s second loss in both league and championship. Well done to the team who gave it all and to the management of Glen McDermott, Eugene Carroll, Hilary Lyons and Paul Higgins. The team was: Daniel Lyons, Dylan Burke (0-2), Evan Lyons, Bryan Johnston, Seamus Hailstones (0-1), Sean Carroll, Ryan Fitzpatrick, Dillion McDermott, James Carroll (0-1) Michael Barry, Patrick Benson, Aaron McKenna, Lee Deignan (0-1) Dylan Willis (4-0), Shane Deignan (1-2). Subs: Brendan Hailstones, Adrian Benson, Christian Monaghan, Conor Kearns.

WHILE it was disappointing for both minor teams, we should reflect on their achievements over the last four years as most of these players move to adult football. Both of these teams represented Sligo at Feile in 2014, with the Girls winning the Feile All Ireland Shield while in the same year both teams won their respective U14 A Championships on the same memorable day in Collooney. They then went on to win many other titles with many of them representing Sligo at various levels and this year the Girls won the A Championship and the boys won the A League to round off a very successful underage career. They have brought great success to the club with many memorable and enjoyable days for parents and supporters and we look forward to both teams going on to represent the club at senior level in the years to come. CONGRATS to Tourlestrane on making it three in a row and well done to the Enniscrone/Kilglass club for the very successful hosting of the County finals on Sunday. THE U13 Feile team had a great win over Drumcliffe/Rosses Point last Thursday after extra time in the A Feile semi-final. They now take on St Marys in the final - date TBC. ALL roads next Sunday lead to Cloonacool and Bunninadden with both our Ladies and Men’s senior teams contesting Championship finals against Curry. First up the Ladies play Curry in Cloonacool at 12.15PM in the Junior Final with the men taking on Curry in Bunninadden at 3.30PM in the Intermediate final - please come out in force to support both teams. THERE was no winner of the lotto last weekend with the numbers drawn 10, 11, 12 and 27. There was one match 3 winner, Aine & Maria Brennan. The next draw is this Saturday 20th in McDermotts, Castlebaldwin with the jackpot at €4,800.

THE club wish to express sympathy with the family and relatives of Martin Kearns, Sligo and formerly of Geevagh, Brian McGonigle, London and formerly of Riverstown and Maurice Conboy, Tubbercurry who died recently.

ST NATHY’S

IT is with great pride that we say congratulations to our senior team who became Senior Ladies Sligo County Champions at the weekend. They defeated their well known rivals Geevagh in Kilkoyne Park Tubbercurry with a scoreline of 13 points to 9 in what can be described as the most challenging of conditions. This admirable group of ladies and their management faced a year of many challenges and this achievement is proof of their dedication to each other and the sport. The player of the match award was presented to our very own Jane O’Dowd who played an outstanding game amongst her team mates. Well done to the team, the captains Ann-Marie Coleman and Etna Flanagan and their manager John O’Hara with the support of Helen Gannon. THE team will now enter the intermediate Connacht stages, meeting Galway’s St. Brendans this weekend. Official date and venue is yet to be confirmed for the match. Well done again to all involved and a special thank you to all the support they received on the day which is always very much appreciated.

ST MARY’S

OUR U16 girls contested the A championship final recently in an exciting final against Eoghan Rua.

The opposition raced into a 4-02 to 0-02 lead in the 1st quarter but corner forward Casey Cox was then deployed as a sweeper and the St Mary’s girls gradually got a foothold in the game.

Thereafter resolute defending by a backline of Amy Hopkins, Diana Mcdonagh, Eden Rooney, Ellen Bastible, Sorcha Gorman & Chloe McGowan aided by an additional defender kept the opposition scoreless for the rest of the half.

Goalkeeper Laoise Treanor’s accuracy from kickouts started the platform for many attacks and midfielders Kayla Breheny & Roisin Martin also got control of midfield at this stage resulting in some great teamwork and scores from the midfielders and the 5 remaining hardworking and lively forwards of Emma Corcoran, Ciara Gilroy, Lisa Kelly, Helen Monaghan & Dervla keaveny, resulting in the half ending level @ 2-08 to 4-02.

In the 2nd half Casey Cox reverted to corner forward and contributed some fine scores along with the other forwards and midfielders, to continue their good form of the previous quarter.

Aine Gorman was also introduced to the forward line and made a telling contribution.

The opposition never gave up and tried to work their way back into the game with some subs introduced but St Mary’s prevailed to win their first U16A title since 2010 on a scoreline of 5-15 to 6-3, with captain Ciara Gilroy lifting the cup in front of a large St Mary’s support.

The other members of the squad Jane Cox, Emma Ledwith, Sarah Gillen, Rachael Cawley, Grace Mulholland & Megan Kilcawley also contributed significantly during this successful championship campaign.

(Thanks to Sinead Corcoran),
