The Sligo Champion

Coney Island Challenge for Elaine O’Halloran

-

THE popular Coney Island Challenge is set to be staged again on Sunday 21st October at 11am starting from Sligo Rugby Club in Strandhill.

The Warriors Run committee is hosting the race with all proceeds going to the Elaine O’Halloran Rehabilitation Fund. Elaine from Strandhill was left paralysed after a car accident last November in the US when she was working as a groom and tragically two of her friends lost their lives in the accident. She has since been taking part in an intensive rehabilitation programme in Florida and remains in good spirits. She hopes to return to Ireland soon. Proceeds from the Coney Island Challenge will go towards her rehabilitation fund and adjustments that need to be made to her family home as she continues on her journey.

The 10 mile and 10 kilometre run takes runners from the Rugby Club out onto Dorrins Strand along by the stone pillars and while the 10 kilometre runners turn on the beach, the 10 mile runners continue onto the island and all return along the same outward route. A 10 kilometre walk will also take place along the same route as the run on the day.

The Coney Island Challenge has been staged for the past several years by members of St Anne Parish as a fundraiser for repairs and renovations to St Anne’s Church in Strandhill. With all work completed the 2018 Run was not going to go ahead. However the Warriors Run Committee, with the assistance of Neil Walton and Richard Wood-Martin, were delighted to take on the task to host the race this year and all proceeds will go to the Elaine O’Halloran Rehabilitation Fund.

Runners can register online at www. coretiming.ie or an onsite registration station will be open at the Rugby Club on Saturday 20th October from 6.30pm to 8.30pm and again on Sunday morn- ing from 9.30am to 10.30am. Early registration is advised due to limited t-shirt numbers (the first 300 online registrants) and a cap on entries. All events kick off at 11am sharp and runners and walkers are advised that the strand is usually wet under foot so as your running shoes may get damaged don’t wear anything expensive. The event is chip timed and prizes are available for 1st, 2nd and 3rd Male and Female in the 10 mile and 10 kilometre runs as well as first male and female in the Over 50’s veterans categories. 1st Male and Female will also receive a small prize. Other prizes are available too on the day.
