McCabe bemoans lack of preparation
SLIGO Rovers’ Rhys McCabe said his side’s disrupted preparations for Saturday’s Irn-Bru Cup game against Motherwell Colts played a part in their defeat.
“IT doesn’t help. As professional footballers you’re expected to perform at a professional level and give your best. Preparation was not quite up to standard and you’re up at 5 this morning, getting on a flight, coming over here and expected to go and give that same level of enthusiasm you would on a Saturday with full rest and preparation. Take nothing away, I thought Motherwell played really well and they deserved to win.”
He felt that should Rovers have had full preparation and a full night’s rest, things would have been entirely different.
“I don’t like to make excuses. As a group we didn’t really perform, but like I say it doesn’t help. If you give us full preparation a and a full night’s rest then I almost guarantee you you go out and perform better, you’re not as tired.
“2-0 scoreline makes it look as though they had all the ball and all the chances. We had loads of chances, maybe on another day, lack of concentration and maybe mental fatigue, plays a part, but another day you might score two or three and it’s a closer game.”
“A huge thanks to the fans who travelled. They put their hands in their pockets every week and they’ve come here with that storm and under the conditions and they deserve a lot of credit.”
McCabe also confirmed that he is no closer to knowing whether or not he will be at the club next season, but with Lyttle set to leave, that would seem unlikely.
“No closer. That’s up to the board,” he said.
