‘More seats outside council office than in Ballymote’

-

“There are more seats outside the Council offices here in Sligo along the river than in the whole town of Ballymote,” Councillor Keith Henry told Sligo County Council at a recent meeting.

The Fianna Fáil Councillor has requested Sligo County Council install on street seats or benches in the South Sligo town. He proposed his motion at the October meeting of Sligo County Council. He informed the meeting that “the only seating provided in the town is in the town park and that there is a need for benches or seats on the streets.

“Residents have contacted me looking for these to be installed as they are a basic feature and requirement in any town and I fully agree with them. Why do our businesses pay rates if we can’t provide basic facilities such as these?” Cllr Henry said.

He added: “We should be supportive of people who walk to do their shopping and business in the town but for many different reasons some people need to stop and have a rest or indeed many might just want to sit and have a chat with people. I’m asking that funding be allocated to install a number of seats in the town in consultation with the local community” Cllr Henry concluded.

Cllr Henry was informed by Director of Services Tom Kilfeather that funding could be sourced for these seats in the future or through the help of Councillors proposals funding. Since the meeting Cllr Henry has worked with the Ballymote Tidy Towns Committee to put forward a funding application for the seats.
