Manorhamilton LOCAL HOMELESSNESS
Local homeless people’s difficulties were clearly highlighted at a recent public meeting organised by the North Leitrim Community Network in Manorhamilton’s Bee Park Community Centre.
Network chairperson, Pat Love welcomed everyone and stated that because local rents have risen to over €800 per month a number of people are experiencing the trauma of homelessness. He also pointed because of the problem of homelessness nationally ‘3,000 little children are sleeping in hotel rooms tonight.’ Joel Smith, who spoke on behalf of the North Leitrim Men’s Group, said because of local homelessness issues many people are ‘couch surfing’ at the moment.
Mr Smith indicated he was aware of one person who was sleeping rough in the Bee Park. He believed the current spate of local homelessness was due largely the ‘built in poverty trap’ in which many people find themselves.
Joel indicated that young people between the ages of 18 and 25, who are not working, because they can not access employment, are the ones who are becoming homeless in the main.
But Mr Smith also added ‘it (homelessness) affects every age group in society’ and besides he stated there are too many ‘people living in sub standard accommodation. It is having a massive impact and it is understated.’
Meantime Pat Love also said ‘we need to compile a full list of properties that are available in the area as part of a possible solution to addressing the local housing crisis.’
Mr Love also stated the North Leitrim Community Network ‘will hold another public meeting in Manorhamilton to discuss what progress has been made in addressing the local issue of homelessness.’

Newtownmanor LOVE WHERE YOU LIVE
The outcome (s) for this year’s competition were announced at an event in Lough Rynn Hotel, Mohill, two weeks ago, on the evening of Wednesday, October 10. It was noted that the competition has grown and developed in the past few years and this year there were 108 entrants, spread across the three municipal disticts of Leitrim county council.
As noted previously, there are seven possible areas of activity for which awards are given. Newtownmanor is only really able to compete in the ‘Cleaner and Greener’ category. Once again we did not receive an award this year, but it was noted that North County Leitrim was exceptionally well maintained overall.
Our neighbours in both Dromahair and Drumkeerin won awards in the ‘Cleaner and Greener’ category and we congratulate them for their success. We will have to see if next year we are able to change that outcome!
Nonetheless, everyone in the Newtownmanor area, who supported our entry for this year, should be assured that their hard work did not go unnoticed. Well done to all for your participation and effort.
