TOURLESTRANE’S 3 IN A ROW

Congratulations are extended to the Tourlestrane Senior Men’s team on winning the Co. Sligo Senior GAA Championshop last week for the third year in a row beating neighbours Tubbercurry in the final. Three in a row is an extremely rare occurrence in any sport and has only been done by two other clubs in the history of Sligo GAA – by Tubbercurry in the 1940s and 1950s and by St Mary’s in the 1970s and 1980’s.

Tourlestrane is a rural club with huge involvement by a large percentage of the population living in the parish and great credit is due to the players of the pres- ent squad, but also to the many dedicated club officials, coaches and mentors of a more senior age group who put facilities and mind sets in place to make this great event happen. Events of this magnitude do not happen by chance and best wishes are now extended to Tourlestrane as they go forward to play in the Connacht Club Championship, representing the best of Sligo Club football.

The healthy rivalry existing between neighbouring clubs, Tourlestrane and Tubbercurry will continue for many years to come, as most of the players attend school together in St Attracta’s Community School and play with each other on school teams as they progress through school.

The community, social and economic life of both parishes is intermingled totally, as it should be in any healthy society. However, the loss of this final will be felt hard by this present squad of Tubbercurry players, many of whom have been representing their club at senior level for over 15 years with only one championship success to their name, that in 2014.

Over the last two decades, Tourlestrane have won 10 county senior championships, an amazing statistic by any club. With the number of young players coming through to senior level, Tourlestrane will be top of the pile for many years to come.

It is up to the other clubs in the county to up their own game and improve structures within their own club. What of Tubbercurry?

Without doubt they have been the second best team in Co. Sligo over the last few decades, and have contributed greatly to the Sligo GAA, providing many players and officials over the years. However, second best is not good enough for many members, and a lot of soul searching will need to be done over the coming months to see where the club goes from here.

One senses the present squad has some unfinished business in relation to winning more titles, but they must prove that on the playing field if they want to be remembered as a good team. Other neighbouring clubs Curry, Mullinabreena and Bunninadden would also like to have a say in the destination of future trophies, but they too have a mountain to climb to achieve the heights of Tourlestrane. We look forward to next year.

PHOTO EXHIBITION

A very interesting photo exhibition will take place at St Nathy’s Hall Mullinabreena over the bank holiday weekend in October on the 28th and 29th from 12.30 p.m. to 6.30 p.m. This exhibition includes thousands of photographs collected from locals, of people and events spanning the last 100 years in the parish of Achonry/Mullinabreena.

PHOENIX PLAYERS

Rehearsals are now well under way for ‘Moll’, a comedy by John B Keane which will be presented in St Brigid’s Hall on Thursday, December 6, Sunday, December 9, with two repeat performances on Thursday, December 13, and Sunday, December 16. The production is directed by Eamon Gallagher with an all-star cast whose identities have to remain anonymous due to Phoenix Players Data Protection Policy.

PUBLIC MEETING

Everyone in the entire Cloonacool area is invited to a re-scheduled open evening of discussion on how people would like to see Cloonacool in 10 years time, and the practical things that need doing to get there. This meeting will take place on Thursday evening, October 25, in St Michael’s national primary school at 8 p.m. Young and older are all welcome to attend, and more than one person from each family is welcome also.

MOY RIVER FOLK CLUB

Seán Tyrrell will play at the Moy River Folk Club in Cloonacool this coming October 26 at 8 p.m. The House Concert at Moy River B&B in Cloonacool, offers an intimate opportunity to enjoy the music and songs of one of Ireland’s best folk singers, up close and personal. SYMPATHY

Sympathy is extended to Dr Michael Coleman and his wife Catriona and children on the recent death of Michael’s mother Joan in Churchtown, Dublin. Joan was in her early 90’s but was a regular visitor to Tubbercurry over the last 35 years while her health allowed. Her remains reposed at her home in Churchtown and burial took place in Mount Venus Cemetery. May she rest in Peace.

45TH BIRTHDAY

Margaret Killoran celebrated her 45th birthday in Killorans, Tubbercurry, on Saturday, October 13, Congratulations to Margaret, as a large group of family and friends gathered and music and fun was order of the day.

25 CARD GAMES

25 Card Games single hands takes place in Tubbercurry in St Brigid’s Hall at 8.30 p.m. every Sunday night. All welcome to attend.

DANCE CLASS

TUBBERCURRY FRC

Parent and toddler – This group meets every Monday from 10.30 a.m. All parents/guardians/ grandparent babies and toddlers are welcome. There are plenty of activities for the little one and the all-important cup of tea for the adults. Inquiries welcome to 071 9186926.

FRC Counselling Service – Tubbercurry Family Resource Centre provides an adult bereavement and relationship Counselling service. This service is open to the public and you do not need a referral. We have a fully qualified and accredited therapist available for appointments. At times a waiting list applies but we try to keep this as short as possible.
