SEAN TYRRELL IN CONCERT

Seán Tyrrell will play at the Moy River Folk Club in Cloonacool this coming October 26 th at 8pm. A native of the slower moving West of Ireland, Seán took his time before committing himself to record his first solo album. Seán emigrated to New York in 1968 put together a band, Apples In Winter and recorded an album in 1974.

This did not last too long due to internal differences within the band. He later moved to San Francisco and began a solo career where he rubbed shoulders with some of the greats of the folk scene.

Eventually Seán tired of the road now having a young son and returning to Ireland in the late seventies he continued to work at his music, but seldom played professionally. In 1978 he began working for University College Galway, based in the heart of the Burren in county Clare. He was invited to guest on two albums with renowned uilleann piper Davy Spillane and having toured with Davy soon got a taste for the road again.

The Coast of Malabar is possible Seán’s best known song but he has produced several albums over the years and all with that same distinctive, soulful, folk voice; the voice of experience.

The House Concert at Moy River Folk Club in Cloonacool, offers an intimate opportunity to enjoy the music and songs of Seán Tyrrell up close and personal. Booking on 087 2512030 are essential.

CALLAGHAN’S PLACE

Beezneez Theatre Company are making final preparations for the winter segment of their national tour of Callaghan’s Place and have announced four local dates for the production of what many consider to be John McDwyer’s finest play .

Callaghan’s Place is the second part of John McDwyer’s Leitrim Trilogy and following the hugely successful revival of Lovely Leitrim in 2016, it was inevitable that calls would go out for a revival tour of Callaghan’s Place.

Callaghan’s Place was a massive success when premiered in 2003 and was toured three times by the company including sold out , week long appearances in London and in Newcastle for the Irish Arts Festival there.

It has since become a staple of amateur theatre and has been performed all over Ireland. It was a major hit at Boyle Arts Festival earlier in the year.

Locally, Callaghan’s Place will play at The Dock, Carrick on Shannon from Wed Oct 30 th to Sat Nov 3rd (071 965 0828 thedock.ie), Roscommon Arts Centre on Tues Nov 6 th (090 662 5824 roscommonartscentre.ie), Glens Centre, Manorhamilton on Fri Nov 9 th (071 985 5833 theglenscentre.com) and Hawks Well Theatre, Sligo on Wed Nov 21st (071 916 1518 hawkswell.com) .

2018 FILM COMPLETION AND COLLABORATION AWARDS

As part of a new partnership Sligo, Leitrim and Roscommon County Councils have come together with filmmakers from the three counties with a view to supporting the film sector the region to grow and develop.

Each of the three local authorities involved in this project recognise the value of film as an artform and the contribution that film can make to the region – socially, culturally and economically.

In adopting a regional approach, we recognise that we can achieve a lot more by harnessing the capacity, resources and experience of agencies and practitioners of all three counties.

The Film Completion Award supports an individual filmmaker or film company to complete a project already commenced. The purpose of this is to support the careers of ambitious filmmakers, particularly emerging filmmakers and to support work with a strong cultural or progressive impact and filmmaking that takes risks on talent, form and content, where the more commercial sector cannot.

The recipients of this year’s awards are Christine Braithwaite and Roisin Gerathy.

Having started her career over twenty years ago in Belfast as 3rd assistant director on her first feature film Divorcing Jack, Christine Braithwaite worked up to camera operator on leading dramas Emmerdale, Coronation Street and many more.

Now based in Ballaghaderreen Christine has been filming promos, stop motion animation and writing scripts for features, shorts and entertainment.

Roisin Gerathy is a freelance producer, production manager, arts administrator and film curator born and raised in Castlerea, Co. Roscommon.

After a number of years honing her skills in New York and Dublin, she decided to make the leap back to living in the North West, where she has continued to develop short and feature film projects, as well as curate and manage a number of different film festivals and film initiatives.
