Darragh is winner of Waterford Greenway trip

-

DARRAGH Sherwin was the recent winner of a trip to Experience the Waterford Greenway. The trip of accommodation and bike hire for two people was offered by Sligo Greenway Co-op as a reward to those who subscribed as shareholders in the Co-op in recent weeks. The prize itself was donated by a local businessman anxious to see the Sligo Greenway become a reality. The Co-op is the community lobby group who have campaigned to create a greenway in County Sligo, on the route on the disused railway line running between Collooney and Bellaghy.

Darragh, from Ballintogher, happens to be a cycling enthusiast. He is also a great admirer of the old railways of Ireland and is excited at the prospect of many of them being brought back to life as cycling routes as part of the new greenway network currently being proposed by Government.

In presenting Darragh with his prize, Pat McCarrick of Sligo Greenway Co-op said “We had a great response to our support and shareholding appeal in recent weeks.

“There is huge local enthusiasm and anticipation with regard to the greenway. More and more people like Darragh, are getting involved to ensure the local amenity and tourist attraction is created.”

Greenways provide the ideal off-road safe route for local families and tourists alike, allowing users the freedom to pass from one local village to another away from the dangers of speeding traffic. Huge benefits accrue in the areas of mental and physical health for users.

In recent times, cycling and walking on such routes is being prescribed by clinicians throughout Europe whose patients present with conditions such as anxiety and depression.
