GARDA MUTINY

Contrary to public perception, the Garda Síochána was not set up as an unarmed police force.

Initially they were armed just like their predecessors, the Royal Irish Constabulary. Three months after being established, over 95% of the entire force mutinied.

The Civil War broke out during the Garda mutiny and it was only the involvement of some Gardaí on the Anti-Treaty side of that terrible war that forced a resolution of the mutiny. An enquiry recommended the establishment of a new type civilian unarmed force.

The Garda mutiny after the formation of the Irish Free State will be the topic of what is sure to be an interesting Manorhamilton and District Historical Society lecture entitled ‘Garda Mutiny 1922,’ by Leitrim native Dr Liam McNiffe on Monday night, November 12, at 8 p.m. in the Bee Park Community Centre.
