The Sligo Champion

Locals line out for Ireland

TWO Sligo footballers lined out for the Republic of Ireland underage teams last week.

Grange’s Seamas Keogh, formerly of Benbulben FC and Sligo Rovers, who now plies his trade with Southampton, captained the Ireland Under 17s in their UEFA Under-17 International Tournament.

Keogh captained Colin O’Brien’s side to defeats against England, Czech Republic and Germany.

Keogh continues to impress at both club and international level.

Speaking after the Germany defeat, coach Colin O’Brien said there are plenty of positives for his side to take.

“We got what we needed from the past few weeks. These games replicated what we will face in the European Finals. The players mightn’t see it now, but the past fortnight has been invaluable.

“We’ve been in every game, but there are a few things that we need to eradicate. They’re all very fixable, so there is plenty to work on for the players in the next few months.

“The players have learned about the fine margins at this level. We need to be more clinical, but there are so many positives to take.”

Ireland Under-17s return to action in the Spring as preparations continue for the UEFA Under-17 European Championship.

Meanwhile, Sligo Rovers’ Kailin Barlow featured in two of the Republic of Ireland Under 16s’ Victory Shield games.

The Republic of Ireland failed to defend their title, but did finish in second place.

Barlow came on as a second-half substitute in the opening game defeat to Northern Ireland, before also coming on as sub in the 4-0 victory against Wales.

He did not feature in the final game, a scoreless draw against Scotland, which saw the Under 16s finish in second place.

I thought the team carried out their instructions to a tee and the whole squad deserves tremendous credit for a fantastic week.

Despite failing to defend their Victory Shield title, Head Coach Paul Osam praised the performance and the progression of the players over the course of the week.

“We were disappointed with ourselves in the first game but the response from that, the win against Wales and today, has been fantastic.

“I’m excited about this group, we’ve got a few players missing as well and there is always room for improvement but they’re a great group who want to learn.

“It’s been a brilliant week for us and I’d like to thank all of the players, staff and the volunteers down here for their efforts.”
