Chaplin’s ‘City Lights’ comes to Castlebaldwin art gallery
Charlie Chaplin’s 1931 film ‘City lights’, with live piano accompaniment by Mark Murphy, is to be screened at Taylor’s Art Gallery, Castlebaldwin, on Friday, November 23rd.
Written, produced, and directed by Chaplin, the silent film follows the variously humorous and poignant story of Chaplin’s tramp in his relationships with a flower girl and a millionaire.
Of Chaplin’s films, City Lights was his personal favourite. Combining romance, comedy and pathos, the film was immediately successful on its release, and is today regarded by many as one of the greatest films of all time.
The screening will feature live piano accompaniment by Mark Murphy. A graduate of Newpark Music Centre, Murphy is an accomplished and versatile performer. In collaboration with singer/songwriter Perry Blake, he appeared on RTE’s The View and In Concert, and toured Ireland and Europe; locally, he has played with the Bughouse Band, the Bill Stewart Quintet and That 70s Band.
The film will be screened in the visually stunning setting of the Western Saloon at Taylor’s Art Gallery. The saloon has been created in an authentic and detailed Wild West style and decorated with western memorabilia.
The screening commenc- es at 7.30 p.m. Admission is €7 (adults) and €5 (children). For bookings, contact Taylor’s Art Gallery and Music Centre, Castlebaldwin, on 071 916 5138.
