Fianna Fáil selects its Local Election teams

-

THERE were no surprises when Fianna Fáil selected its canddiates to run for next year’s Local Elections with experienced line-ups to the fore.

The Fianna Fáil Convention for Local electoral area Sligo/ Strandhill and Sligo/Drumcliffe was held last Thursday in The Sligo Southern Hotel with Deputy Leader Dara Calleary T.D., Chairperson.

Two candidates were selected in Sligo/Strandhill, outgoing Cllr’s Tom MacSharry and Cllr Rosaleen O’Grady.

This area now takes in Cartron and Forthill which makes it a six seater and Fianna Fáil believe they have an experienced team to meet the ongoing challenges. Priority issues include Health, Housing and ensuring Sligo University Hospital is equipped with a Cardiac Catheterisation Lab which Fianna Fáil have been lobbying at the highest level for some years.

Cllr Tom McSharry also pointed out that property tax was kept at same level over the past five years at Fianna Fail’s insistence as it believes taxes must be kept down given the many challenges faced by business in this area not least the growing uncertainty with Brexit.

There were three nomina- tions in the Sligo/Drumcliffe Area and all three were selected including outgoing Cllr Seamus Kilgannon, Donal Gilroy and Colm McGurrin.

Sligo/Drumcliffe is a vast area starting at bunduff bridge on the Leitrim border right through Grange to Ballintogher, Collooney, Ballisodare, Kilmacowen and everywhere between. The party’s newest candidate is Mr. McGurrin, a native of Ballisodare whose experience and understanding of the community will serve the area well.

A party spokesperson said priorities will include adequate supports for farming families, jobs, health and housing crises and the rural urban divide.

“Fianna Fáil believe we are fielding a formidable team with the appropriate mix of ability experience and determination. As a party we look forward to the campaign ahead with the certainty that our candidates can provide the best representation in tackling the many challenges facing our community

The party’s final convention will take place on Sunday next December 16 th in Killorans Tubbercurry @ 7:30.
