Jail for man looking for a fight in Collooney

A 37-year-old man was described as behaving very badly by Judge Kevin Kilrane was sentenced to two months in prison. Rory Boyd, with an address at Woodstream, Coolaney, was charged with unlawful possession of cocaine at Temple St on March 29 th 2015, public order at Main St, Collooney on May 2nd 2016, a further charge of public order at Johnston Court, Sligo on October 24 th 2017 and unlawful possession of MDMA at The Courtyard, Main St, Carrick-on-Shannon on July 30 th 2017.

Sergeant Derek Butler said gardaí carried out a search of Boyd’s car on March 29 th 2015 and found a plastic wrap with white powder with Boyd then admitting it was for his own use. The cocaine had a value of €140. The court heard gardaí received a call on May 2nd 2016 that a youth had been assaulted on Main St, Collooney. When observing CCTV, gardaí saw Boyd leaving a public house in a threatenin­g and aggressive manner and he then got a large bottle of cider and emptied it and was inviting others to hit him. He was seen hitting the youth from behind and he was seen walking up the street with his arms outstretch­ed, looking for a fight.

Boyd was also charged with possession of €60 worth of MDMA on July 30 th 2017. Sergeant Butler said he had 54 previous conviction­s. Mr Edmund Henry, solicitor (defending) said his client had a number of difficulti­es and was under a death threat that gardaí were actively managing. He said his client was engaging with the Probation Service and mental health services and that the offences were mostly historic bar the Johnston Court one which he is contesting. He asked the judge not to impose a custodial sentence.

The judge replied Boyd had behaved very badly and had 54 previous conviction­s and continued to offend. On the cocaine charge, he sentenced him to two months in prison and on the public order in Collooney he handed down a further 2 months in prison, describing it as very bad public order threatenin­g people with a bottle. He also handed down a two months in prison for the possession of MDMA.
