AUSSIE Touring Side Visits Sligo RFC

SLIGO RFC played host to a school’s team from Victoria State in Australia last Monday. There was a great day of rugby, with a Sligo selection of U16s and U17s playing two well-contested matches, in what was a fine showcase of rugby. Well done to Ross O’Boyle for coordinating the touring team visit and to all those involved in hosting the visitors.

Bundee Meets Culain

U8 player Culain McHale won the Good4U competition to meet his rugby hero Bundee Aki and lead Connacht out in the Sportsground last Saturday when they played Perpignan in the European Challenge Cup. Culain proudly wore the Connacht jersey as he led out the team, but insisted on wearing his Sligo RFC shorts and socks too and later we learned that he had his Irish rugby jersey on underneath; representing Ireland, Connacht and Sligo.

Rugby Taster Session

Sligo Rugby Club held an open evening on the astro turf pitch in Ballymote last Monday. This was an introduction to rugby training session organised by CCRO Ross Mannion. Thanks to Colm McWeeney from Connacht Rugby and Kieran Treanor from Sligo Rugby’s underage section for their help on the night to promote rugby in Sligo.

Weekend Round Up

SLIGO U17s had a tough encounter against Creggs on Sunday. The home side dominated in the first half and clocked up a 12point lead with no reply. However, the visitors came back at them and the lead changed several hands in the second half, with the final score 29-31 resulting in a 2point loss for the home side.

The U16s recorded the narrowest of victories over Corinthians last Saturday in Hamilton Park.

Sligo opened the scoring with an Oisín Cregg penalty but later conceded a try to the visitors, with the conversion failing to add the extras. A second penalty from the boot of Cregg proved to be the final score of a nail-biting match, which means that Sligo leapfrog Corinthians into 5th position on the league table.

The U16 girls recorded a comprehensive 53-0 win against a very physical Galwegians last Saturday, which seals their place in the Division 2 Connacht semi-final against Buccaneers in January.

Sligo U14s continued their unbeaten run in the Division 1 Pool A of the Connacht U14 league. Round 8 saw another comprehensive win for Joe Walsh’s charges, this time it was local rivals Ballina who were on the receiving end of a 24 – 0 score line. The U14s have now extended their lead at the top of the table and go into the Christmas break knowing that they meet 2nd placed Corinthians when they return to action on 5th January.
