MY OLD HOMETOWN GURTEEN

The launch of the 2019 My Old Hometown Gurteen Country Music Festival took place on Friday night last November 30 th in Téach Murray Gurteen. The line up for the festival was officially announced to an excited crowd. As the entertaine­rs were announced a video message from each played on the big screen installed for the night.

Chairman of the committee Adrian Tansey started by introducin­g Councillor Paul Taylor who wished the Committee every success on behalf of the south and west Sligo tourism group in this their 2nd year of the event. Taylor said it was a great weekend last year and it’s looking like it will be bigger and better in May 2019.

Tansey went on to announce the line up featuring Olivia Douglas and Michael English on the Friday night May 3rd. Saturday the 4 th will see Stuart Moyles followed by Ciaran Rosney and the queen of Country Philomena Begley as the special guest.

Sunday 5 th sees afternoon dancing with Shauna McStravock followed by Carmel McLoughin. Topping the bill will be local man and country music star Patrick Feeney who was on hand to sing a few songs on the night much to the delight of the crowd.

Anther of the 2019 line up Shauna McStravock was also a guest on the night and she entertaine­d the crowd with a range of songs. Local artist Maureen O’Dowd provided the main music and entertainm­ent for the night.

Among other events being planned for the weekend is a country music Exhibition on the Saturday and Sunday in the Coleman Centre. More details of this and other events will be announced in the coming weeks. People can keep up to date by following them on FB @ myoldhomet­owngurteen.

THE 2 JOHNNIES

Ireland’s favourite comedy duo The 2 Johnnies bring you their new show “Get Loose” which will tour all over Ireland and is coming to the Hawk’s Well on Friday February 1st. Tickets are on sale now through www.ticketmast­er.ie and local venues nationwide.

The 2 Johnnies are a hugely popular and hilarious Music & Comedy Duo, Johnny B (O Brien) & Johnny Smacks (McMahon) from Tipperary. Known for their comedy sketches and songs that capture the uniquely funny side of all things Irish, the 2 Johnnies have become part of the fabric of the Irish Entertainm­ent scene and they are only just getting started!

Fresh off the back of 2 sell out nights of their live podcast show in Dublin, their xmas show in Whelan’s sold out to full capacity in 24 hours and now the boys set off on the high roads and highways of Ireland for their first ever nationwide tour.

Tickets for all shows from €23 including booking fee from Ticketmast­er outlets and venue box offices nationwide except Vicar Street priced at €28 including booking fee.

ANYTHING GOES

An annual event at the Hawk’s Well Christmas with Anything Goes is a special festive concert for the whole family to share in the magic and music of Christmas. Join Dave, Eddie, Kieran, Sinead and Tonto from the much-loved Sligo band, Anything Goes as they perform a selection of festive favourites for all the family at the Hawk’s Well Theatre on Saturday 22nd of December at 3.30pm. Tickets are €7 per person (+ €1 renovation fee) and €25 for a family of four and are available from the Hawk’s Well website www.hawkswell.com or the box office on 071 9161518.

OXFAM BIRTHDAY BASH

The Oxfam shop in Sligo will host a special birthday celebratio­n on Friday 14 December to mark its tenth anniversar­y and thank the local community for its ongoing support.

The shop staff and volunteers warmly invite the local community to join the from 12pm to 4pm on the day to celebrate a decade of raising vital funds together for people living in poverty and crisis worldwide.

Shop co-manager Anne McGowan said: “We wanted to pay tribute to the fantastic support we have received from the public in Sligo over the past decade, so we decided to throw a party as a ‘ thank you’. Everyone is invited as we will be hosting a birthday party with cake, tea, coffee and treats, as well as having a Lucky Dip with many fantastic prizes including vouchers, fashion and jewellery.”

Shop co-manager Michelle Thompson added: “I would like to sincerely thank all our customers and the local shops and businesses who have supported us enormously over the past 10 years. Drop into the shop on Friday 14 December from noon to celebrate with us and have a chance to win one or maybe more prizes!

“We would also like to say a special thank you to all the volunteers, past and present, who have given their time, talent, experience and much needed support for the last decade. We still have three of the original volunteers who started with us 10 years ago – Carol Taheny, Kathleen Kilgannon and Dawn O Grady.”

Carol Taheny said: “I have loved my time spent volunteeri­ng with Oxfam, making so many new friends and we feel like an Oxfam family here in the shop. I don’t think I’ ll ever have the heart to leave.”

Kathleen Kilgannon said: “It’s been great to make a real difference by volunteeri­ng, not only to those Oxfam helps overseas, but by playing our part in the local community too.”

Dawn O Grady said: “Volunteeri­ng has been great fun, and I’ve learned new skills too. Though I don’t know where those ten years have gone!”
