Mooney wins National U23 title
SHANE Mooney of Tireragh AC put in a terrific performance last Sunday at the U23 National Indoor Championships in Athlone winning the 60m hurdles in a deadheat joint finish with Paul Sexton of Annalee AC in a time of 8.75.
It was an outstanding performance from Mooney who is a first year medical student at NUIG.
The Irish Life Health Junior and Under 23 Indoor Championships in Athlone produced great results from all Sligo AC athletes in attendance. Orla Delahunt secured a gold medal in the U23 3000m walk, Leo Doherty placed silver in the Junior men’s 800m in a time of 1:57. Lauren Cadden placed 3rd in the Junior women’s 60m with a PB of 7:66 and and Ryan Roberts took home Bronze in the Junior 3000m walk.
Corran AC’s Kate Hosey was also competing at the championships and the club had great results on Saturday in the Juvenile County Sligo Championship in Claremorris. The club had U12 Girls Relay team competing along with Mila Clancy (60m U11), Tara Howard (600m U11), Elizabeth Tighe (gold and silver in the Long Jump U16), Fiona Whitehead (bronze U16 60m), Cian Flynn Silver (60m Boys U14), Chantelle Kielty (U12 Girls 60m), Adam Taheny (gold U12 boys 60m), Cian Flynn (U14 Boys Hurdles and gold in Long Jump), Adam Taheny (Boys gold 60m Hurdles).
Sligo AC had many great performances both individually and in the relay events at the competition.
Saturday morning saw the first of the club’s athletes travel to Ballyshannon for the 6th Annual Streets of Ballyshannon 5K in tough running conditions. However despite the weather a great turnout of 260 participants made the start line. Blustery weather didn’t hamper Sligo AC athlete Martin Brennan who took first place in a time of 16:46 in his first outing for the club.
Congratulations to Audrey Colreavy who was second lady overall in 19:05 and first in her category.
Other great performances by Sligo athletes as Pal Gilmartin complete in 18:53, Nicky Davey in 19:43, Eilish Doherty-Colreavy in 21:58 and Frank Kelly in 26:00.
Congratulations to the small contingent of Sligo AC athletes who took part in the 35th Raheny 5-miler on Sunday that saw over 5000 participants compete.
Weather conditions were perfect apart from some windy sections on the course. First time competing over the distance for both Aoife Kilgallon 29:54 and Karen Mulrooney 31.44. Well done also to Martina Kilgallon who finished in 42.26
