Rowing Club athletes excel in UL

-

SLIGO Rowing club was represented by 17 athletes at the national indoor rowing championships in UL recently and there were some fantastic performances from the locals.

Among the stand out achievements was Glenn Patterson’s bronze medal in the Men’s Open Category which features the best of what Irish rowing has to offer racing over the standard 2,000m on the dreaded rowing machine.

Patterson, spurred on by his coach Tommy Colsh, began the race at a blistering pace and went through the 1,000m mark in second place at 3minutes 3 seconds.

The pain of the fast start kicked in during the 3rd quarter and he slipped back to fifth place going into the last 500m.

Going into the final 300m he still lay in 5th, behind O’Driscoll & O’Donovan of Skibbereen and Ireland’s international coxless pair.

Digging deep into reserves, Patterson managed one final push for the line and, in doing so, passed both Skibbereen athletes and finished in the bronze medal position in a PB time of 6minutes 14seconds. All of the teams raced well and this finished off an extremely successful and enjoyable day for the athletes, coaches and parents of Sligo Rowing Club.

Sligo Rowing Club is looking forward to the forthcoming water season and hosting their own time trial ‘head of the river’ race on the Garavogue on February 16th next.
