Compensation for victims of credit card fraud

-

COMPENSATION has been paid in relation to credit card fraud carried out by an Enniscrone man.

David McGinty of Woodview House, Ballymooneen, Enniscrone appeared before Sligo District Court where he provided compensation of €232 to be given to victims of his fraud.

At a previous court sitting the 22-year-oldpleaded guilty to deception charges, namely possession of stolen property at Enniscrone Garda Station and two counts of making a gain or causing loss by deception at Woodview House in Enniscrone on July 23rd, 2015.

Sergeant Derek Butler had told the previous court sitting that McGinty had ‘ taken particulars of credit card details from customers and bought goods’ while working in a shop.

The court was told that McGinty had a number of previous road traffic convictions.

Commenting on the matters, Judge Kevin Kilrane said the offences were a ‘shocking betrayal of trust’ and that credit cards should be treated ‘ the very same as handling cash’.

A probation report furnished to the court outlined that McGinty was ‘on the straight and narrow’ and undertaking voluntary work.

Probation Officer, Bridget Moyles, said that McGinty was at ‘ low risk’ of re-offending and was young at the time and ‘made a stupid decision.

At the previous court sitting defending solicitor Laura Spellman said the offences had happened a number of years ago.

It was outlined in court that the total amount of money transacted on the credit card was €232.

At Thursday’s court the money was lodged by McGinty. Confusion arose as to how the money would be passed on to the victims of the fraud as the court and An Garda Síochána could not accept the money.

Ms Spellman outlined that she would notify the victims that the payment had been made available and that it would be divided equally among those impacted by McGinty.
