Hero’s welcome for Shane Haran

THERE was a hero’s welcome in Tubbercurr­y on Thursday night for local Curry athlete Shane Haran who is the Fastest Kid in the World following his phenomenal success at the Millrose Games in New York recently. Shane won the boys’ 55m race in epic style and was supported by coach Dermot McDermott.

The South Sligo AC athletes crowded outside St Brigid’s Hall on Thursday to welcome the young superstar home where he was joined by his proud family.

Alice Belo from Sligo was also taking part in the competitio­n after qualifying through the Fastest Feet programme.

Shane captured the Boys 55m Fastest Kid in the World race at the meet which was held at The Armory’s New Balance Track & Field Center in New York City. Haran won with a time of 8.68.

Coach Dermot McDermott said he was extremely proud of both Shane and Alice’s achievemen­ts in New York. He said: “Huge congrats to Shane and Alice who can boast that they wore an Irish Vest at the iconic ’Indoor Olympics’ and represente­d Sligo on an internatio­nal stage.

“Shane a member of South Sligo AC goes home the Fastest Kid in the World 2019 and Alice who has only started running and is almost a full year younger than the other kids in her race went home to the Mercy primary to a hero’s welcome! Massive thanks to Ray Flynn and Rita Finkel who as always have rolled out the red carpet for the Irish kids and sponsor Richard Donovan,” he added.
