On the sales front, Firm Principal, Roger McCarrick reports on selling approx. 20 farms of varying sizes throughout Co. Sligo. Depending on quality, access and demand, land values varied from €4,000 - €10,000 per acre with most demand for farms in the 20-30 acre size.
He reports strong demand from the U.K. from both Irish people living there and hoping to return, but also from pure English citizens who want to exit Britain ahead of Brexit.
The Brexit debate is keeping downward pressure on the prices achieved by farmers for their products, especially Beef, and this situation needs to be monitored in the coming months.
Mr. McCarrick expects the strong demand from Britain and Continental Europe to continue throughout 2019 for small holdings with cottages, and he is actively seeking these types of properties to list for sale. Rural cottages and old farmhouses are also in demand by these foreign buyers.
The sale of forestry land in small and large blocks is improving, especially for plantation that have been planted over 20 years and are no longer attracting premium payments. Again, values varies widely, depending on the quality and yield class of trees as well as the access available. On the land leasing front, demand continues to be strong for long term leasing of small and large farms. This demand comes from young, Green Cert qualified farmers who want to set up their own independent enterprises. The sale and lease of farm entitlements will commence in March for the coming season, and REA McCarrick & Sons deal with all aspects of paperwork for this important business. If you have Entitlements that are unclaimed upon, they will be lost to the National Reserve, so best get them used.
