Hedges need cutting
LANDOWNERS along the Hazelwood Road to the County boundary are being urged to cut their hedges. Cathaoirleach of the Sligo - Drumcliffe Municipal District Cllr Tom Fox tabled a motion on the issue. “There’s a lot of traffic and buses, particularly along the road to St Angela’s on the R296,” he said.
However, Acting Senior Executive Engineer Declan Noone told Cllr Fox that while the Roads Department could (as funds allow) cut back roadside verges at junctions, the cutting of roadside hedges was “very much the adjoining landowners responsibility.”
Cllr Donal Gilroy asked Noone how the Council could get landowners to fulfil their duties in cutting back their hedges. “We could talk to them first. If we don’t get any result on that, we write out to them under the legislation,” replied Noone.
Senior Engineer Tom Brennan added that cutting roadside hedges was beyond their current resources
Meanwhile, the road signage on all approaches to Ransboro National School are to be inspected in the coming weeks to address safety concerns for schoolchildren walking to school.
Cllr Marie Casserly, who tabled the motion, said the school has a Green-Schools Travel Programme which encourages children to walk to school.
“All around that area is of concern to staff and parents there,” she said.
The meeting heard that the Council had recently revised line markings at the school to provide a safer set down area for the school bus.
The Sligo/Strandhill Area Engineer will inspect the road signs in the coming weeks.
