CHRISTMAS LIGHTING CEREMONY
Tubbercurry will be lit up with Christmas Lights this Christmas as never before with a fantastic range of new lights and features throughout the town. This will certainly add to the Festive atmosphere around town for people who are shopping and socialising over the next month.
The Christmas lighting turn on ceremony takes place on this Friday, November 29, at 5 p.m. when hot chocolate and treats will be served. Music and song also part of the event. We might even get a visit from Santa.
Gallagher House family and friends will be our special guest to switch on the lights for 2019. Everybody is invited to come along to get into the Festive atmosphere.
CHRISTMAS GIFT IDEAS
If choosing a Christmas gift this season, consider buying local. In recent weeks three new local books have been published – The Way That It Was IV by Tubbercurry Active Retirement Association, Returning Home by Padraic O’Dwyer and the Windings of the Moy Revisited by Pat McCarrick. In addition, local businesses are asked weekly to support very worthy events, clubs and societies, and this should be returned when choosing where to do your shopping.
CHRISTMAS CHORAL NIGHT
A Christmas Choral Night is taking place on December 11 in St John the Evangelist Church, Tubbercurry starting at 7 p.m. Organised by Holy Family parents’ association with all proceeds in aid of School Development.
Some of the fantastic acts taking part include Cathal Gavin, Coolaney Gospel Choir, Oisin McCann, Holy Family NS and St Attracta’s Secondary School. MC for the night is Tommy Marren.
It was a sell out success last year so it is advisable to get tickets early. There will also be a mega raffle on the night and tickets can be bought separately. Tickets are available from Holy Family NS, Gillespies, Kennedy’s Sweet Shop, The Laundry Basket and committee members.
CLOONACOOL CHRISTMAS PARTY
The Cloonacool Christmas party will take place on Sunday, December 8. Bookings can be made with Attracta at 086 3058844. Mass will start at 3 p.m. followed by a delicious festive dinner and music in the hall. Don’t miss this wonderful annual celebration, book your place now.
MARY PERRY R.I.P.
The recent death occurred of Mrs Mary Perry (née Reynolds) late of Cloonmeehan, Bunninadden. In her early 80’s Mary was always a bubbly character who always saw the good side of life and her enthusiasm was infectious.
Mary worked for many years on the Nursing Staff of Sligo General Hospital where her caring disposition put many an ill patient firmly on the road to recovery. As well as nursing, Mary was a mother of six children and wife to Josie, a busy farmer. Mary managed to juggle her many roles in life and career to great effect and her excellent work ethic was passed on to her children and grand-children.
Her remains reposed at the home of her son Gerry and daughter-in-law Olivia in Tubbercurry prior to removal to the Church of the Sacret Heart, Bunninadden and Burial took place in Cloonameehan Cemetary, next door to her home of over 50 years. Pre-deceased by her husband Josie, Mary is survived by her daughters Kathleen, Rosarie and Sadie, sons, Michael John, Josie and Gerry, inlaws, grand and great grand children, brothers James and Michael and many friends and cousins, all to whom sympathy is extended. May her caring and gentle soul rest in peace.
PADDY JOE DOOHAN R.I.P.
The recent peaceful death occurred of Paddy Joe Doohan, late of Doocastle. Aged 77, Paddy Joe was a very active man in his young and middle years. However, failing health in later years curtailed his movement greatly, an illness he bore with great dignity and patience.
Born and reared in Doocastle, he attended Moylough Primary School and Tubbercurry Vocational School, prior to entering the work force in the early 1960s. His places of employment included Basta in Tubbercurry, GWI in Collooney and in later years in Grady’s Joinery, Charlestown. As well as that, Paddy Joe was a progressive farmer and ran a small dairy herd in Doocastle for many years in the 1970s 90’s.
On the sporting front, Paddy Joe was a fine footballer with his club Curry, and won County Senior Championships in both 1964 and 1972, starring at full back on both occasions. He also played with the Co. Sligo senior team for a number of years during the mid1960s when Sligo had fine teams and players. In later life Paddy Joe took great pride in seeing his son Pádraig and daughters star on Co. Sligo teams of their era.
Paddy Joe’s remains reposed at the Coen Funeral Home where many hundred called to pay their respect to a fine man. Funeral Mass took place in the Church of the Sacred Heart, Bunninadden, and burial took place in Doocastle Cemetery. He is survived by his beloved wife Geraldine, son Pádraig, daughters Myra, Martina, Claire and Angela, brother John, sisters Kathleen, Mary and Bridie, in-laws, grandchildren, and many relatives and friends, all to whom sympathy is extended. May he rest in peace.
JP DUFFY R.I.P.
All of Counties Sligo and Mayo and indeed further afield were shocked at the sudden death of JP Duffy of Curry. In his early 50’s and widely and affectionately known only as J.P, he was a much loved husband, father, brother, friend and employer. His death occurred during what should have been a fun event, the sea to summit run, cycle event in Westport.
A native of Tavneena, Charlestown, he crossed the county Boundry for love when he met and married Yvonne and they have lived in Curry over the last 20 years or so. JP got totally involved in Community Life in Curry, especially in the GAA Club and was very generous with his time and money to all who sought his help. His Western Utilities company is a major employer of many people in the Curry and Charlestown areas.
His passing will leave a huge void not only in his immediate family but in the entire community of Curry and Charlestown.
He is survived by his wife Yvonne, doting children Aoife, Patrick, Eanna, siblings Christy, Caroline, Eddie, Pearl, many in laws, friends and employers.
His funeral in Curry was huge and representative of the esteem in which he was held. May he rest in Peace.
JOHN BRENNAN R.I.P.
The recent death occurred of John Brennan, late of St Anthony’s Cresent, Tubbercurry and originally from Drimina, Tourlestrane. Aged just 63, John had been in poor health in recent years.
As a youngster he attended Drimina Primary School and later Tubbercurry Vocational School before taking up employment.
John worked for many years in Abbott in Sligo and also worked as a Porter for many years in Sligo General Hospital where he was always a caring employee. He was forced to take early retirement due to failing health about seven years ago. His remains reposed at the Morahan Funeral Home, Tubbercurry prior to removal to St Attracta’s Church Tourlestrane. Burial took place in Rhue Cemetary. John is survived by his brothers Michael and Thomas and various inlaws and cousins, all to whom sympathy is extended. May he rest in Peace.
PAT SPELLMAN R.I.P.
The recent tragic death occurred of Pat Spellman, late of Bunninadden Village and originally from Doocastle.
In his early 60’s Pat was loved by all who knew him and whose life he touched.
Pat went to Primary School in Doocastle and attended Banada Abbey Convent for his Secondary School education 1970 1975.
After finishing his secondary school education he followed his fathers footsteps into the insurance business and worked for many years in that profession where he helped and advised all who sought his help.
Pat had an easy way of speaking and his clients always had total trust in his advice. Born and reared just a mile inside the Mayo County Boundary but working most of his life in Co. Sligo, Pat became an ardent Mayo GAA Supporter all his life even though he was a member of Bunninadden GAA Club and served on the Sligo County Board as a club delegate. It is a pity he never say Mayo win a senior all-Ireland, as that was his one wish.
In recent years Pat suffered ill health and often sought help for his condition, and often spoke of his problems. He had many good friends and family who helped as best they could.
His remains reposed at the Coen Funeral home where many hundreds called to pay their respects to a very gentle human being.
Removal took place to the Church of the Sacred Heart Bunninadden, via Doocastle, and burial took place in Kilturra Cemetary.
Pat is survived by his brothers John and Declan, sisters Mary, nephews Kieran and Tristan, cousins, inlaws, many good friends, neighbours and class mates, all to whom sympathy is extended. May his gentle soul rest in peace.
JOHN HENEGHAN R.I.P.
The recent peaceful death occurred at his home of John Heneghan, Banada, Tourlestrane. Aged 96, John was a fun loving jovial character who enjoyed life up to the end despite various tragedies that life threw at him over the years. John loved life and loved meeting the people of South Sligo, and he could be met in any parish or town or village in South Sligo for social activities along with his beloved wife Christina.
He farmed around Banada and Tourlestrane all his life and he enjoyed passing on his knowledge and experience to younger generations.
Predeceased by his son Pádraig and grandson Barry, John is survived by his wife Christina, daughters Angela, Rita and Imelda, son Seán, grand-children, great grandchildren, in-laws and relations, all to whom sympathy is extended. His remains reposed at St Theresa’s Funeral Home, Curry, and funeral Mass was in St Attracta’s Church, Tourlestrane, with burial in Banada Cemetery. May he rest in peace.
ALFIE GILMARTIN R.I.P.
The recent peaceful death occurred of Alfie Gilmartin, late of Achonry. In his early 60’s, Alfie was a quiet and unassuming man who went about his work and business quietly and without fuss.
As well as farming the family holding at Achonry, Alfie worked on various Local Employment Schemes, work he did with great care, dedication and purpose.
He enjoyed coming to Tubbercurry at weekends on the Local Link Bus for social activity in the May Queen Lounge, as he enjoyed the traditional and country music and dance fare provided, as did his friends on the same bus.
The same group of friends and music enthusiasts met every weekend for years, and Alfie will be greatly missed by all of that group as well as his immediate family.
Alfie’s remains reposed at the Coen’s Funeral Home prior to removal to Achonry Church and burial took place in Achonry, cemetery. He is survived by his sister Pauline Mullarkey and brother-in-law William, nephews, relations and many close friends and neighbours, all to whom sympathy is extended. May he rest in peace.

A single hand 25 card game takes place in the Day Care Centre, Tubbercurry on Tuesday night, November 26, at 8.30 p.m. Over a €100 in prizes.
PHOENIX PLAYERS
Congratulations to Shane Keyes, who won Best Actor in the Confined Section at Kiltimagh One Act Drama Festival and to Padraic Neary, who won an Adjudicator’s Award as author of Trapa Tony, performed by the Phoenix Players.

Senior citizens Christmas party will take place in Cawley’s Hotel on Sunday, December 15, commencing with Mass at 2 p.m. Further particulars from Maureen Vesey at the Day Care Centre.
TUBBERCURRY IFA
Tubbercurry IFA Branch are holding their annual general meeting on Wednesday, November 27, in the Yeats County Hotel, Curry.
P.receding the meeting at 9 p.m., a talk on Mental Health and Well Being, will be given by Mr Tomas Murphy (MHC), and everyone is welcome to attend this. Tubbercurry IFA branch AGM will follow.
OX MOUNTAIN HERITAGE CENTRE
The Ox Mountain Heritage Centre are hosting there annual Christmas 25 card drive on Saturday, November 30, at 9 p.m., €500 in prize money, raffle, Hampers and spot prizes on the night. Admission €10.
