Phoenix Players win big at drama festival

THE 2019 One-Act Drama Festival hosted by the Western Drama Festival turned out to be a successful one for the hosts, who picked up a number of awards.

There was an amazing atmosphere as the results were revealed by adjudicato­r Mr Aodh McCay A.D.A. and the Phoenix Players were announced as winners.

The Tubber based drama group won in the confined section with “Trapa Tony” a play about an attempted robbery, with a very unexpected ending written by Padraig Neary and directed by Mark Dunne with outstandin­g performanc­e in the confined section going to Shane Keys for his extraordin­ary portrayal of the character ‘Bruce’.

Pat Feely played the shrewd ‘ Trapa Tony’ to great effect in a moving performanc­e.

Sharon Hannon who gave a superb performanc­e of ‘ Babe’ the mixed up girlfriend Bruce was thrilled to accept the winning trophies on behalf of the Phoenix Players.

In the Open Section, popular group Cornmill Theatre, Carrigalle­n, Co. Leitrim won with their brilliant play ’ The Aftermath” directed by Ronan Ward.

The festival was a terrific success and enjoyed greatly by the loyal patrons.

The Western Drama Festival committee extended a special thanks to Tubbercurr­y & District Credit Union who were the sponsor for the festival.

This was a great festival featuring new and exciting writing. The Western Drama Festival look forward to the three Act Festival running from the 6 th to 14 March 2020.
