GAA Convention is this evening

THE Annual Convention of Sligo GAA board which was due to take place on Thursday evening was postponed to this evening at 7:30pm in the Clayton Hotel.

Sligo GAA explained that this was necessary following a ruling from the Connacht council hearings appeal committee. “In the interest of fairness after the ruling it was decided to postpone so as to allow all candidates time to prepare for Convention.”

There are no names being put forward to contest the chairman, vice chairperso­n, assistant secretary or PRO positions, with Brendan Leonard, Declan Rouse, Sean Carroll and Bart Barrins remaining in those respective roles.

Keith Henry and Bernardine McGauran are the two names contesting the Secretary position, with Bernardine the Secretary for the last 2 years.

With Treasurer Peter Greene having completed his five-year term, the name put forward for that role is Gerard O’Connor.

Joe Taaffe and David Cummins are the names put forward for the position of assistant treasurer, Joe currently holding that role.

There are no names put forward to contest the position of Irish & Cultural Officer, held by Dermot Gannon. John McPartland and Peadar Niland are the two names put forward for the position of Coaching Officer, with John currently holding that role. A number of positions will be appointed by the outgoing Co Committee also.

John Niland has completed his tenure as a Connacht Council representa­tive while John Murphy has also completed his term as Ard Chomhairle.

The Convention is taking place this evening, Tuesday, in the Clayton Hotel from 7:30pm.
