Bumper 2020 programme at Hawk’s Well
Hawk’s Well Theatre has announced another new bumper new season, with its’ latest brochure for January – April 2020 out now. Featuring all the shows and events taking place during the coming months, the booklet is available to pick up at the theatre, at locations all over Sligo, and to view or download at www.hawkswell.com.
Kicking off the new year, the new season is as jam packed as ever, with plays, music, comedy, workshops, talks, and productions of all shapes and sizes planned.
Theatrical highlights include Livin’ Dred’s acclaimed absurd and poignant tale Trad in January, Irene Kelleher’s acclaimed Gone Full Havisham in February, Take off your Cornflakes in March Seamus O’Rourke’s funny but scary An Ogeous Brose in April, and Fred & Alice; April’s lunchtime play about love in the time of OCD.
Music lovers won’t be left wanting this season, and there’s Folk, Pop, Rock, Country, and a whole lot more on offer. It all starts in January, and brushing away the New Year blues, Reeling in the Showband Years sees in 2020 in its’ traditional New Year’s Day slot.
It’s quickly followed by Cherish the Ladies, who mark 35 years of vivacious music, song and dance. Patrick Feeney holds a two-night residency as February arrives, while popular songstress Eddi Reader returns, and Take It To The Limit take on The Eagles catalogue later in the month. Luke Thomas and the Swing Cats present their story of Swing in February while two veterans of the acclaimed Steely Dan rhythm section Jim Beard & Jon Herington visit in March.
There’s a very special celebration night on Saturday 29 th of February as musicians from all over Sligo gather to pay tribute to one of the most loved and respected musicians in Sligo, Gerry Grennan.
Meanwhile, vocal group The Drifters relive the magic of that musical era and Christy Dignam & Joe Jewell from Aslan perform together. The Unthanks bring their stunning harmonies, and Nashville singer/songwriter Max T. Barnes performs and chats his Stories Behind the Songs, all in April.
Michael English and Tommy Marren have collaborated together to present a new musical Who Dares to Dream which will be performed at the theatre in April.
From the world of comedy, Sligo’s own John Colleary joins the Laughter Lounge, who will be banishing the new year hangovers on 4 th January. Conal Gallen presents his new show The Joker in January while Jason Byrne returns in February. Neil Delamere is also back the same month.
Elsewhere, the ‘King & Queen of farming satire’, Stevo & Sinéad, will be lampooning as Farmer Michael & Kathleen Live, in April.
There’s a wealth of productions from local groups this season. The annual Sligo Hospital Panto – this year, Alice Through the Looking Glass goes down the rabbit hole in late January, while the Windmill Players present hilarious murder-mystery WANTED – One Body! as the month comes to an end.
There’s a chance for anyone to get involved with Hawk’s Well’s own Sligo Acts holding an Introductory Workshop in early February, while
Skreen/Dromard Drama Group present the timely-titled 20/20 Vision in the middle of the month.
March is a particularly bumper month for local productions. As the month begins, Sligo Musical Society perform the classic The King and I, while Sligo Fun Company and Chapel Lane School of Performing Arts present fundraiser Musical Theatre Magic.
Cloonacool Players are back with rollicking comedy Don’t Tell the Wife, while Everyman Production’s hilarious Second Honeymoon gets reacquainted, both in middle of the month.
Shaun Purcell’s new musical from The Mad Ravens, The Boy From the Far Side of the Moon, premieres at the Hawk’s Well in March.
Grange Players present classic novella Of Mice and Men, ahead of Ursuline College’s All Shook Up, which gets its dancing shoes on as the month comes to an end, just before Lough Gill Player’s 30 year production The Maiden Aunt.
Beat It Dance School perform at the end of March while the Lisa Cooper Dance Academy take to the stage in April.
Eist is a stunning new production that explores influences and connections in traditional music, song and dance which will be produced by Edwina Guckian in April in partnership with Hawk’s Well Theatre and The Dock.
There’s also exciting activities for kids like Kyle Riley’s Sing to Me in March, and two Babies gigs; Acoustic Babies, and Bongo Babies across the season.
Later, there’s a chance to get creative with CreateSchool’s Brick Flicks workshop, while Joe Daly magical abraKIDabra will spellbind, both in April.
