Model teams up with hospital

-

Artist Andy Parsons has been appointed Artist-in-Residence at Sligo University Hospital in a unique Arts and Health partnership with The Model, Home of The Niland Collection, funded through the Creative Sligo programme.

This is the initial phase of a collaborative arts partnership between the Model and Sligo University Hospital, which it is planned will continue into the future.

Engaging in creative activities makes a significant contribution to improving the lives, health and wellbeing of all people. A growing body of research supports the positive role of cultural activity in shortening hospital stays, alleviating a range of medical conditions and reducing GP visits.

Creativity in all its forms is an essential part of our humanity. It is vital for a healthy lifestyle.

When we create art together we become stronger communities.

This partnership between The Model and Sligo University Hospital offers a myriad of positive benefits to patients, families, carers and staff.

As an artist, Andy Parsons creates paintings, books, drawings, prints and sculpture. Andy is particularly interested in finding ways to bring art into everyday life.

The residency will offer a range of popup events including hands-on creative activities for patients and care-givers through a gentle encounter in the hospital environment. Andy has exhibited widely and won several awards for his work.

He lives in Strandhill, Co. Sligo with his family.

The Model is one of Ireland’s leading arts centres, and is committed to bringing the power of creativity to people and communities across the North West. The Model welcomes everyone to visit and spend time with our wonderful collection of art works free of charge.

As part of this partnership, paintings from the collection have been placed in private care areas of the hospital so that patients and families can encounter them privately there.
