KATIE’S BIRTHDAY A TWO MILLION HIT!

CAVALCADE ORGANISED BY PARENTS FOR DAUGHTER’S BIRTHDAY

- By CIARA GALVIN

OVER two million people have watched a video of Rathcormac NS pupil Katie Regan being surprised by friends and classmates for her birthday last week.

Katie, who turned 12 on Thursday last could not have a normal birthday with friends due to social distancing during the Covid-19 pandemic.

Instead, her parents Katie and Kieran surprised her by organising her friends to drive by their house in Rathcormac with birthday wishes.

Speaking to The Sligo Champion, Katie’s mother explained how it all came about.”She was saying her birthday this year would not be the same because she couldn’t see her friends and saying how talking to them on her iPod isn’t the same. We told her she could have a sleepover when all this is over.”

Katie and her husband contacted their daughter’s friends’ parents and asked if they would drive by the house as a surprise. Katie, her siblings Sam (13) and Ciara (9) joined her in the driveway of the house to play soccer when the surprise took place.

“Her friends started driving by, Hannah, and Simone, and she thought they were just on a drive together in separate cars but then she saw the line of cars and realised it was especially for her birthday. And her best friend Éabha was holding a sign out the sun roof.”

Asked what her favourite birthday present was, the fifth class student told her parents it was ‘all the beeps’.

“She was just so happy to see her friends,” said Katie’s mother.

The clip uploaded to Twitter went viral within hours and has now amassed over two million views, with news outlets across the world carrying the story.

It is safe to say it’s one birthday that will not be forgotten in the Regan household any time soon.
