Grange PPS U17s praised by school
PRIOR to the postponement of all sporting fixtures in the current Covid-19 pandemic, there was some good news for the U17 footballers from Grange PPS as they reached another Connacht final for the North Sligo school.
The school said it was a proud moment for the North Sligo area: “Amongst all that is going on we have good news from our recent U17 Connacht Cup Semi Final Vs Ephin which was played on Thursday, March 12th. The superb facilities at Ballisodare United Football Club astroturf with the battering hailstones, wind and rain not enough to deflate our boys’ spirits. Thirty minutes into the game it remained 0-0, but we had the majority of the possession.
Up popped an unlikely goalscorer on the 31st minute, Augustine Watters from left wing back making the most of the space and finishing calmly. Augustine’s goal started the goal spree. Co-captain Marc Heraghty was next to score, followed closely by twin brother John. Augustine then added another before John got his second, going in at half time 5-0 up.
“The lads knew the wind would play a huge factor again in the second half and did not let any complacency creep in and kept their focus. John Hergahty completed his hat trick before selfishly creating a goal for his cousin Micheal Langan. Micheal or “Mixer” then slotted home another.
John Hergahty completed a man of the match performance with a truly impressive 4th goal. Elphin got a late consolation goal and it was great to see them celebrate it. The scoreline finished 9-1.
“In what were truly challenging conditions the lads stayed focused and determined to reach the final. Belmullet await us in the final but as we all know its not possible to say when this will be played. Well done lads, our 4th Connacht final in two years. A remarkable achievement from a small school.
You’re a credit to yourselves and the school. Best of luck in the final.”
