USING WRITING AS A FORM OF ESCAPISM IN TOUGH TIMES

-

WE all have hobbies and interests that help us escape from everyday life to give our brains a rest.

For some it’s sport, for others it’s art or music, and for lots of people the chosen activity is writing.

Mary Teresa Armstrong is no different. She loves writing. Lately, she has taken to song writing, but that’s not where it ends.

Often using faith as her inspiration, she also likes to write poetry and stories for children.

One of her latest pieces of work ‘If Only’ is to raise funds for Pieta House.

Pieta provides free therapy to those engaging in self-harm, with suicidal ideation, or bereaved by suicide.

Donations and fundraising makes up 80% of the charity’s income, and the postponement of Darkness Into Light until October means the charity needs vital funds.

“My song is a small attempt to call out to those people and tell them there is light, love and even laughter ahead if they would only just open the door. If even one person hears my song and changes their mind then I have achieved something,” Mary said.

It’s not the only song she has written, that and ‘My Healing Song’ are both available to listen to on YouTube, simply by entering the song name in the search bar.

“I have another one that I haven’t recorded yet. I can’t do anything at the minute because of coronavirus,” she said,

“I write a lot. I write stories for the kids, poetry, I’ve always liked writing.

“I wouldn’t be up to speed on politics, it’s all kids stuff. I just love it.”

If you wish to donate to Pieta House, you can do so via their website at www.pieta.ie and click ‘Donate’.

IT’S NOT LIKE MY LIFE HAS ENDED. I HAVE AN ILLNESS BUT I’M NOT SICK. THIS HAS TAUGHT ME A FEW THINGS. IT’S BROUGHT US ALL CLOSER.
