PANDEMIC

The COVD-19 continues and the restrictions on movement for individuals continue till at least May 5, and possible longer. Most small business in Tubbercurry are closed at present including all pubs and seated restaurants, hotels, smaller retail outlets, hairdressers and barbers etc. with only food outlets, filling stations and pharmacies continuing to trade.

People lucky enough to have gardens are enjoying to work in them and the good weather of the last few weeks has been a God send to facilitate gardening and home maintenance outdoors.

Sporting activities such as football and athletics which should be in full swing now are prohibited in group sessions and individuals must train on their own most of the time.

The Forest Walk in Rathscanlon and Rhue is getting great use by local residents and great respect to the social distancing rules and regulations is being shown by walkers.

TIDY TOWNS

At this time of the years there is usually great activity by the Tidy Town Committee on various projects around town, but this cannot be done on an organised fashion this year due to the COVID-19 restrictions.

However, residents should still be aware that they can do their own bit of Tidy Town work around their own property or on public spaces near their home. With so many people off work at present it is an ideal activity to keep occupied and keep boredom at bay. To be fair to some people, some individuals are doing great voluntary work of a Tidy Town nature using their own initiative but more could be done.

Many approach roads and streets have litter accumulating that is visible on walking. If you live on a littered road, why not take an hour to go out with a bag and collect the litter? It can be deposited at the Council Yard on Ballina road or collection of it can be arranged by Geraldine Brennan or Roger McCarrick.

COMMUNITY CALL

Tubbercurry Chamber of Commerce and Community Association have linked up with Sligo County Council for the Community Call initiative, and many members have enlisted as volunteers. If elderly or less able people need any help with daily chores, please feel free to ask through the Community Call initiative.

FRONT LINE STAFF

All too often the work of nurses, doctors, carers and general catering and domestic staff of Hospitals and Nursing Homes is taken for granted, but now in the midst of this COVID-19 Pandemic, we all sit up and notice all the great work they do.

Many Hospitals and Nursing Home staff commute daily from South Sligo and Tubbercurry to various care centres in Sligo, Tubbercurry and other locations. We say a BIG THANK YOU to all of you. Your work is really appreciated.

ANTHONY HENRY R.I.P.

The recent sudden death occurred of Anthony Henry, late of Charlestown Road, Tubbercurry. In his mid 40’s, Anthony was predeceased by his father Des and sister Mairead.

Anthony was a gentle and kind young man who made many good friends over the years. He loved playing football, both GAA and Soccer, and was a goalkeeper for many years with Real Tubber. He was a great Leeds United fan and over the years made many trips to Elland Road with the West of Ireland Leeds Utd. Supporters club.

Anthony was on the staff of Sligo General Hospital, work he thoroughly enjoyed.

Due to Government and HSE guidelines on COVID-19, a private funeral took place with burial in the family plot in Achonry Cemetery.

Anthony is survived by his heartbroken mother Daisy, sisters Roisín and Áine, brothers Patrick, Des and Brian, in-laws, nephews, niece, aunts, uncles, cousins and many friends, all to whom the deepest sympathy of the community is extended. May his gentle soul rest in peace.
