THE death has taken place of well known Sligo GP, Paddy Henry.

Dr Henry (92) had lived in Dublin in recent years but was formerly of Ballyweelin, Rosses Point and spent 62 years as a GP in Sligo until his retirement in 2015.

He died peacefully last Monday week, at Altadore Nursing Home, Dublin., his passing described as Non Covid related death. He is survived by his wife Mary, daughters, Fiona and Aine and son, Pat.

Funeral Mass and burial were private to the family due to the curent Covid-19 restrictions. The Funeral Mass was live streamed from Sligo Cathedral last Thursday. A mass to celebrate Dr. Patrick’s life will be held at a later date.

Born in 1928, Dr Henry grew up in Finisklin and later attended Blackrock College in Dublin. He qualified as a doctor from the College of Surgeons in 1953 before spending three years in England.

The young doctor came home to Sligo and married architect Mary Gilheaney in 1956 and went on to have two daughters and a son. After running a single- handed practice for many years Dr Henry co-founded one of the first joint practice medical centres in the country, the Medicentre in 1978 on Bridge Street, Sligo with Dr Brian Gallagher.

Dr Henry also helped establish the County Sligo General Practitioners Society in 1978.

He was also on the founding council of the Irish College of General practitioners and was its fifth president in 1988.

His first practice was on The Mall and his last solo practice was from his home in Ballyweelin.

Good humour and laughter was something Dr Henry always felt strongly about in medicine and wrote five books in total, two on humour in medicine: The Healing Power of Humour and Ha-Ha-Ha: Further Observations, anecdotes and thoughts of life in general practice.

Dr Henry was much loved and respected not only by his many patients but his colleagues both locally and nationally.
