Carcass dumped on scenic walkway

- By CATHAL MULLANEY

A dead calf is the latest evidence of dumping along the Hazelwood walk.

The carcass appeared on the walkway in the last week, with one passer-by describing the dumping along the popular route as ‘shocking’ in recent weeks.

A witness told The Sligo Champion: “We walked down, we saw this thing on the middle of the road.

“It appeared to be the head of something, and we got closer we thought it may be a small horse but when we got back again maybe it looked like a young calf.

“It’s in the middle of the walkway.”

Another witness believes the calf may have been dumped over the wall, before being dragged onto the walkway by other animals.

“It could have been dumped over the wall and dragged out by wild animals. It probably was someone dumping a dead calf over the wall, there is an awful lot of dumping going on down there, and then foxes or badgers pulled it out onto the middle of the road.”

The wider issue of dumping at Hazelwood has caused concern for users of the route.

The problem of dumping across the county was a matter of discussion at last week’s meeting of Sligo County Council, where members reported an increase in incidents in recent times.

On the subject of dumping at Hazelwood, the witness added: “It’s [dumping] shocking. It’s been reported a number of times to the county council. There are a number of different parties dumping there.

“It’s an unpleasant aspect of the walk, the actual walk itself has never been more popular. A lot of people have started using it, but it’s [dumping] very unpleasant.”

The council and the ISPCA were both notified of the carcass and moves were undertaken to have it removed.
