1km Strandhill footpath would cost over €225k to construct

-

THE construction of a footpath on the R292 road linking Strandhill village with Queen Maeve’s Trail and the Rugby Club would be an expensive project, last week’s meeting of Sligo County Council was told.

Director of Services Tom Kilfeather was responding to a motion from Cllr Declan Bree seeking an update on the progress of the proposed footpath, which has been raised in the past.

Mr Kilfeather said the request has been considered, but the construction of a footpath on the road would require a significant amount of work, including a possible redesign of the road.

Cllr Bree said a previous estimate suggested the footpath would cost in the region of €225,000, and that the footpath would extend over a distance of 950 metres.

He continued: “I understand that there are approximately 18 residential entrances, 7 or 8 agricultural/field entrances and 2 entrances to estates on the route.

“It is noticeable that the linear roadside development in the area has been somewhat consolidated over the years with housing estates being developed including Dorrins Strand, Sandycove and the Sycamores.

“In addition we are all aware that the Queen Meave’s walking trail and the Killaspugbrone Loop are attracting quite a significant numbers of walkers and pedestrians to the area.

“I am still of the view that the provision of this footpath should be considered as a priority by the Council.

“And while I understand that the council had no dedicated funding stream for such works, I was advised that if any funding stream or opportunity to apply for funding becomes available, it would be done.”

Cllr Tom MacSharry said he has enjoyed walking the loop many times, and said it is a very popular attraction.

He too agreed the issue needs to be addressed.

Director of Services Mr Kilfeather said the project will be kept in mind.
