Ladies on the run!

-

SLIGO LGFA were busy over the Bank Holiday weekend not on the field of play but out on the run. The county’s Senior Ladies & management team completed their Páirc go Páirc fundraiser run for 3 charities; Northwest Hospice, Down Syndrome Sligo and Irish Society for Autism. Anne Cunnane Sligo LGFA PRO said: “When Covid-19 struck our Ladies turned a positive into a negative and started helping out in their own communities and raising money for charities. Sligo LGFA Páirc go Páirc was 1000km+ over four weekends in May and the girls were also involved in club events for charity fundraising.

We had great support throughout our journey receiving messages from across GAA football & hurling, LGFA, AFL and Athletics. Those supporters included; Nigel Clancy - Down Syndrome Sligo, Paul Taylor - Sligo GAA Snr Mgr, Katrina Connolly - former SLGFA player and All-Star winner, Rory Began- Monaghan GAA, Paddy OConnor - Sligo GAA captain, Pat Kilcoyne - Sligo GAA, Dermot McDermott - Athletics coach, Donagh Maher - Tipperary Hurler, Aoife Clancy - SLGFA nutritionist, Paul McNamara - SLGFA nutritionist, Eamonn OHara - former All-Star and Tourlestrane GAA manager and Cora Staunton- Mayo LGFA and AFL.”

All videos can be viewed on the SLGFA Facebook. Anne said: “We are very thankful for all donations made to the Páirc go Páirc GoFundMe page as our charities are struggling for funding. You can still donate to our three worthy charities by clicking on the go fund me link on our Facebook page.

“Thanks again to everyone for their support and we hope to see you back supporting us at our games again when we are given the all clear to do so.”

Also over the weekend, the Sligo LGFA Co u16 team requested their counterpart teams in Roscommon Lgfa, Galway Ladies Football, Mayo LGFA and Leitrim Ladies GFA take part in the Virtual “Run for Ríoghnán” on Sunday May 31st at 11am. This is a run organised every June Bank Holiday weekend by St Nathys Senior Ladies to raise awareness about organ donation.

It is held in memory of Ríoghnán Flanagan who passed away in 2015 while waiting for a transplant.

Rioghnan’s sister is part of the Sligo ladies u16 squad this year and his mum, Etna has played with both Sligo and St Nathy’s for many years too.

The u16 squad & management joined in the run and invited u16 squads and management from the other Connacht counties to join them, which they did willingly.

The various counties showed their support and also raising awareness of the importance of carrying a donor card by participating in the 5k run in their own local areas, together while apart.

Anne thanked all of the players, management and people who donated to all of the fundraisers.
