FOOTBALLER IN SHOWGROUNDS ASSAULT CASE
A footballer has been charged with assault arising out of a match played in The Showgrounds last August.
Limerick FC player, Jason Hughes has been charged with assaulting a steward at the venue during an FAI cup match which Sligo Rovers won 6-2 having gone two goals down early in the match.
Hughes was sent off for an incident involving a steward late in the game.
The match saw four players in all being red carded, three Limerick players and Dante Leverock from the home side.
The case of alleged assault against Hughes came before Sligo District Court last Thursday. Defending solicitor, Mr Gerard McGovern said the case would be fully defended.
Hughes is charged with assaulting steward, James Derwin.

Jason Hughes of Singland Villas, Garryowen, Co Limerick is charged with assaulting James Derwin on August 24 th, 2019 at The Showgrounds during an FAI cup match against Sligo Rovers.
While applying for legal aid, defending solicitor Mr Gerard McGovern outlined that the 29 year old had been playing soccer.
However, with all fixtures postponed due to the Covid-19 pandemic many players had been let go from their clubs and he was therefore not earning at present.
Mr McGovern said he may have to change this application at a later date.
Judge Kevin Kilrane granted legal aid. Mr McGovern said the matter would be fully contested.
The case was put back to July 2nd. Hughes was not present in court which is normal during the present Covid-19 restricted sittings of the court.
The defendant was one of three Limerick players were sent off during the match by referee, Rob Hennessy who also dismissed Rovers’ centre half, Dante Leverock.
Rovers won 6-2 having gone 0-2 down early in the match.
